OK...Where would you put your money?

Our local radio station is sponsoring an antique tractor parade this fall with the goal of having 300 old tractors travel 30+ miles down the highway to a neighboring town.

A fellow was talking to me today that he would like to buy a "ready to use" older tractor to have in the parade. His question was: "What's the best old tractor I can buy for under $10,000 that would do well in parades and local shows?". My answer was; "I'll ask around".

What do you think would work in a situation like this? He's never been a farmer, but enjoys and appreciates old things. Thanks

I would suggest a FARMALL "H"..... a nice one with a great paint job and 4 new tires would bring $3,000 - $4,000

But you might be able to get a Dagenham Fordson Allaround for 10K. Maybe not. Comes with rubber tires, carries on the Ford tractor tradition.

I guess I am going to be the odd ball on this but here goes. "He's never been a farmer but enjoys and appreciates old things." Here is a guy who happens to have some money he wants to spend on an old tractor and also appreciates old things. Is jealousy rearing his ugly head or what. Some of the remarks that are made are out of line. Instead of making fun of the guy I think he should be encouraged. After all to those who poked fun of him are you going to tell me you would not sell him a tractor on the grounds he never was a farmer and just happens to be able to afford to spend some cash on a tractor that is ready to go?

I would suggest somting with locking brake pedals foot clutch and a good road gear. I"m not sure hows familiar the guy is with a hand clutch so I would stay away from the dears and some wheatland tractors.

I suggest a hundred or hundred-fifty series Farmall. Not that I am biased but these tractors are comfortable and look really good shined up. Also I think he could pick up a 50 or 55 series Oliver say a 1655 or so that would be comfortable for such a long journey but that might be harder to store.

So go for a 300-450 Farmall wf, gasser with a TA and lights.

If he wants to spend that much money on a restored tractor who is going to ride along and shift gears for him and who is going to get dirty changing oil, airing tires, and those necessary details?

For good looks and something a little different, its hard to beat a Deluxe Cockshutt- Bright red and cream, and that zooty front grill area. The 445/4 Star Molines are also cute, with the metallic brown frame and mechanicals.

My first question, above all else, is how big of a tractor does he want / can he handle? Is he planning on just doing long tractor parades, or other things too? For a long distance parade, I doubt that he'd want a slow moving Oil Pull or Crossmotor Case. He might consider a 830 or 930 Comfort King Case. Big tractor, looks good shined up, and not a usual sight at every parade. (As opposed to IHC and JD) If that's too big, might consider a DC or LA Case

$10,000. is a whole lot of money for most old tractors, even in parade condition. An Allis Chalmers "A" would sure look nice in a parade, that would be my choice I think. Or if he wants a little newer, but still kind of old, maybe a D-21. Of coures a John Deere 4020 is what a lot of people think of when they hear the word tractor. I have to admit that even with that offensive green paint, they are nice when all dolled up.

I am a JD man but one of those big Moline standards with the big fenders and gold and yellow paint would make you take notice.

My favorite for a JD would be a 730 standard.

Seriously, a 656 Hydro would be good, or any of the Cockshutts. A JD letter series could be a problem with the hand clutch.

Doesn't sound like much fun, look for a better class of people to hang around. Too much money, not enough thought on this fella, if you ask me, missing the whole point of restored tractors..... :) :)

Seriously, a Farmall H is a good choice - fast road gear, small/ light enough for hauling & storage, but a real pioneer of one of the milestone changes of farming, helped change agriculture during & after the war. They made a zillion of them, were in production for a long time, based on the F-20, turned into the IHC 300 - so a long, long history. Would be a good parade runner, represent a lot of agriculture, paint up nice....

If he likes Green colors better, a JD model A might be similar? Or an Oliver 70.

Grey & Red would have to be an 8N.

Allis WD.

Guess I would stay away from the older collector rare stuff, as he does not seem to have the itch to keep such a thing going or understand it's workings.

Location is NE South Dakota, the radio station is in Watertown. Last year they had 100+ tractors show up, and the majority were the more common models that you would expect. I know this fellow would like to have something that was just a little different, yet would be user friendly enough for something like a 30 mile "parade".
He's looking for suggestions as to a specific manufacturer and model. Example: Looking at the photo ads, I see a JD 420U, Cockshutt 20 Deluxe, etc.

I have a MH 101SR. for sale, I haven't seen many of them in the photo ads. Also have a friend with a case SI which is a little un common. but I'm also a long ways from you.

Tell him to watch ebay. There are always a lot of old tractors for sale there. They come in all brands and conditions from the 1930's to present. Just depends on what he likes, JD, Farmall, Case, etc. Many are restored and parade ready for $3000-$4000 or less.

Sounds like the guy wants a rig thats just "turn key and go" litterally. I would think to steer him towards any rig that just uses a key to start. Probly something with a foot clutch would be good. And brakes that can be locked together for road travel. Sometimes brake pedals on both sides take a newcomer a long time to figure out. A gas engine would maybe be better too, in that if he was to accidently put gas in the diesel, it wont work too good. But a little diesel in the gas wont kill anything. That"s what I"m thinking anyway.

Holy cow. The guy up at the auto parts store in town has a nice H setting out front for $2,100. Not interested, but shot the bull with him over it, the he took me into the storage shed and showed me a mint JD A just sitting in there for $2,500. He even offered to let me take them out and give them a whirl. They are nice, but I'm not interested. Then he showed me the biggest, reddest Cub Cadet with all kinds of attachments and a new Onan engine, that don't run for some reason, but he'd sell it to me for $500 if I bought the H. Great guy, I just don't need them.

Heck, if your friend's really interested in a nice parade tractor for under $10,000, call Tom at Bristol Auto Parts and take your pick for a fraction of that, or the whole kit and kaboodle for half that. I just don't need them.
