We have been looking at finish mowers to put behind a small compact diesel, around 25 horse. We see the rear discharge and side discharge ones advertised.Whats the differences other than where the grass is discharged, what one is better? What are the advantages and disadvatages to them?

720diesel, I have owned both side and rear discharge and greatly prefer the rear discharge since it spreads the grass evenly (more or less) behind the mower. In thick grass the side discharge will make windrows. Also, you can cut equally close to the edges on both sides of the mower. I think a 5 foot one is all a 25 hp tractor will handle. Check deck thickness and don't get one with a thin deck. KEH

I agree with everything you said and i want to add that a rear discharge takes a little less hp to run because it gets rid of the grass sooner. A side discharge keeps chopping the grass all across the mower untill it gets out the side.

My grass is thick, and a compact tractor with 25 pto hp has a full load with a 5 foot mower if you let the grass go at all!!

I much prefer the rear discharge mower.

I have been using a 6 ft. finish mower behind my old JD 40 for the past 3 yrs. cutting about 5 acres. It has no problems powering that mower. Jack

Deere makes or made their own side discharge model, although I don't know the model number. I first saw two working inside a prison mounted under the Deere 850's the inmates used to mow grass. Then my neighbor picked one up the was for a 3 point that he uses behind his Jubilee for 85 stinkin dollars somewhere, that looks like might be the same model. 85 stinkin dollars for what I think might be a $2,000 mower because is Green. They do excellent work, and my neighbor has a small field that grows nothing except weeds about 3 or more feet tall, and cuts right through it no problem. It's a finish mower mounted by 3 point in his case. Was in great shape when he got it from ??? for $85!!! I can't remember if the ones at the prison were belt driven, but can't recall having seen them remove belts when they removed to wash them. Must've been some sort of PTO involved under those 850's somehow. I don't recall.

Me, on the other hand have a rear discharge 59" belly mounted Woods under an AC B that does just fine around the house, but isn't as slick as my neighbors 3 pointer. Is similar to Ingersall Rands rear discharge belly mounter too, and both went for about $1,500 a couple of years ago. Was a toss up which to get. I'm thinking a rear discharge with a cut that wide spreads the discharge more evenly, but might just be my perception.

Mine works fine, my neighbors works fine. I do like the idea of that 3 point though - mount, use, dismount, done. Whereas mounting and dismounting mine, well, it just stays on, but that B's only a mower.

Just a thought. With a rear discharge you can go up a field then back down again next to your previous pass. With a side discharge you might have to go round and round (if there is any quantity of grass that is ), say if it discharges to the left, you would be turning right all the time, so you would not be pulling in grass that had been previously mown. For example, my 'Walk behind' JD JE75 lawn mower came with a grass catcher, a mulch plug and side discharge chute. I made a rear discharge hood for it for mowing longish grass for that very reason. I hardly ever use the side discharge chute.
