Howdy,

Well, this is mainly to those out there who currently or formerly worked for a tractor dealership. I caught an ad in a local paper the other day with an opening at a New Holland/Case dealership close to home. I was thinking about applying for that opening. I have no idea what all you do at a job like that but since I can't seem to find work in the weather business (what I went to college for) I figured something in agriculture would be the next best thing. I'm just curious if I have the skills that I'd need for a job like that. So, anything you can provide would be greatly appreciated. God bless.

I started out YEARS ago as a setup guy and general mechanics helper. Did new machineryt setup and refurbished trade in equipment and tractors.
Was offered a job tues at the local CNH dealership and turned it down because of the money. Said I would come in and talk to themwhen I retire from my regular job in four years. Plan to kind of wind down doing what I started out doing. Probably seasonal work on new setup or maybe contract it by piecework on new equipment setup.

I'm not an "employer". If I were, it wouldn't make a hill of beans to me what you were trained for. The simple fact that you took the time, effort and commitment to get trained would matter to me. That would indicate substance.

Secondly, from what I have seen in our workforce in the last ten years, if you are dependable, show up when you are supposed to, don't whine too much, and don't bust out on a drug test, you'd be my guy!

Thirdly, if you are truly interested in working at that ag dealership, then you've got the skills in my book.

Good luck. Dang it; go for it!

if it is in the shop be prepared for back breaking hard dirty filthy work. splitting tractors and working on balers did my knees and back in. however, if it is inside in sales or parts dept, then that is a lot easier and cleaner and probably pays more.

For the most part I agree. Most of todays farm equipment is quite large, you need a fork lift or overhead lift just to assemble a hay rake because the nuts and bolts are about the only part of it that you can pick up with your hands. Also, expect to attend schools and training sessions regularly. The electronics and computer controlled functions on the new machinery is just totally amazing and very complicated.

Apply for it !!! What is the worst that can happen? You don't get the job. You don't have it now. So you've nothing to lose. When I applied for my current job twenty years ago I got a kiss off letter and I wrote back to tell them why they were making a mistake and I got the job!
