Where do you get your weather?

Just curious as to where you folks like to get your weather forecasts. Local TV, cable networks, web, or elsewhere? I'm getting more and more impatient with The Weather Channel and some of the internet weather sites because of excessive advertising and off-topic information. For example, when I want to know the five day forecast, I don't want to wait for a 5 minute segment on how to prune your rose bushes to conclude. Your comments? Thanks. Jim.

Priamrily, I get my weather from the TV. Look carefully at the maps and radar plots, and then do my own predictions. Often I"m equal or better than the forecasters. (Oh, I do have a degree in science, that helps!)

I get my weather from 2 sources. One is NOAA (weather.gov then find yourself on the map)which can give you about a week of forcasts for your choice of counties or parishes. The other one is My-Cast. You have to register for My-Cast but its free. Once registered, you can set your preferences for areas of interests (relatives, vacation spots, etc), and you can set Email settings for NOAA and Civil Defence (AMBER) Alerts. The radar can allow you to zoom in to your areas (which I really like), and shows basic radar, storm track, and satalites views. The forcasts have 3 settings (a 12 hour block with 1 hour intervals, a 2 day forcast with 6 hour intervals, and a 5 day forcast with 12 hour intervals).

Howdy,

Well, as I like to say, God has a reason for everything. And since my degree in meteorology isn't gettin me a weather forecasting job that pays, I use that knowledge to do my own forecasting. A little study on some webpages and I put together my own weather map (ala microsoft paint) and then use the computer models found on a few sites to look at the future stuff. Following the current situation and looking for repetitive patterns in the models is key. Can't buy the model forecast word for word or you just get a constant change and no reliable forecast (can you say t.v. weather forecast?). I'm no big fan of tv guys since most are there to look good and "accuracy" is just a $2 word thrown around to get more viewers. God bless.

NOAA for the forecast. If you look at forecasts from the "private" outfits (Weather Underground, Weather Channel, etc) they seem to be worded the same as NOAA. (Wonder who's stealing from who?)

Also, I like the Convective Outlooks page under NOAA. Gives a three day extended severe weather forecast. You can click around at this site, and learn all kinds of good servere weather stuff.

Get my transpiration data from Agrimet by BuRec and I have Weatherbug on my desktop and I have agriculture.com zip code weather and weather.com in my Favorites and historical weather from Western regional Climate Center, part of National Weather Service. Then I go look off the front porch to find that all those sources are liars! No really they're not that bad, but... I ALWAYS USE THE FRONT PORCH CHECK JUST TO MAKE SURE. It's a belt and suspenders approach.

You need to get yourself a "weather brick". Now what is a weather brick, you may ask. It is any old brick that you can find and you place it in your front yard with the following instructions:

If the brick is wet -- its raining.
If the brick is hot -- its sunny.
If the brick is cold -- look out for frost.
If the brick is missing -- there are tornados nearby.

I use weather bug, runs in my task bar all the time on the computer. For trends and 'strategic planning' I use the Univ of KY Weather Center (www.ca.uky.edu) , it gives the NWS predictions and a lot of climate data to help gauge accuracy. TV weather, no thank you, every channel a different forecast.

Someone once said, "I hear a lot of people talking about the weather, but nobody ever does anything about it." Tomorrow's weather has almost an 80% chance it will be like today.(Extrapolated from many years of wx statistics.) Any forecast over about three days is a wild-a$$ed guess. Don't like the weather? Wait about 2-3 days and it'll change.

Accuweather seems to be the best one one. They call in the forecast to our local AM station, for at least 15 years. Dr. Joe Sobel is consistently more accurate than the TV weathermen (and weatherladies)..... ..... I like the 15 day extended forcast online.....

I use Weather Bug. A small desktop app that loads quick and is updated pretty often. Free download. About as dependable as any other source I've found.

I interpret the regional radar loop from Intellicast to see what is emminent.When I need forecast info, I have Weather Underground bookmarked and usually rely on that.

With that in mind, I have Weather Underground set as my homepage. The five day for my zipcode comes up when I turn the box on.
They have a five dollar a year deal to cut out all the ads, but with Mozilla blocking the popups and a fairly fast connection (Direcway)to get past the flashing banners I haven't found it necessary.
Their forecast is about as likely as anybody's; the local and regional animated radars will give a better idea what's going to happen soon.

Aloha, Yep, I agree, just stick your head out the window. The weather forecasts are either 1 day too early or 1 day too late. That's what happens when you work in a building without any windows. LOL

I get mine from Noaa No banner ads, no pop-ups. And the page loads fast. Set it for your city and then bookmark it.

For climate change they measure things like the temperature of the oceans or the amount of arctic ice, things that change very slowly. For your local 3 day weather, they are looking at a computer model of the weather off Alaska. The better forecasters stick their heads out the window and look to see how the models are doing.

After years in the excavating business and flying business, with some farming on the side I"ve made a study of the weather. I look at forcasts, but mainly read the upper wind (jet stream) forcast then predict my own!! I"m not perfect, but compete better than the "you better bring your umbrella" people on TV
