Tractor Hauler #2 - what to do?

My primary rig is a 1990 K3500 4x4. Still strong as an ox but that 454 loves the gasoline.

#2 rig is wife's 1993 GMC Yukon 4x4 with the 305 motor. Truck has +298K miles. Just put new transmission and rear end in it last yr. Now the motor is getting real weak. My question is this -

A) Would you rebuild the original motor?

Labor to remove, rebuild and reinstall costs more than new long block motor.

B) Install new motor (long block) as sold by auto shops?

I like this option as it will only require remove and replace plus it has 3 yr. warranty. What is your experience with these motors?

Do yourself a hugh favor, Scrap the 305. I just did the one in my truck and it's the best thing I ever did. The 305 was a dog and burned as much gas as the 400 small block I have now. And wow what a power difference.

Easy choice. Go to Chevy dealer and buy a Goodwrench engine. These are new engines - not rebuilt! Less than $2000 and you're on the road again with a good warranty straight from Chevy.

I have one in my old truck and we put one in my son's truck last year. No problems with either one.

Some dealers run specials where they install for next to nothing. Check them out. Goodwrench engines are the best thing Chevy sells.

You ask what would I do. Well I'll tell you what I did. Sold my Chevys and bought a used 1996 Dodge 2500. By far the best truck I have ever owned. But if you insist on keepin them take Allen's advice and buy one of these NEW GM 350 long blocks I think they are around $1400 ? and they are NEW !

Id go with a goodwrench from chevy. I have rebuilt many small block chevys and had both good and bad luck. Like someone sed below you will spend a lot of time...in and out. You can do it yourself it's not hard bur no garontee.

If by "auto shops" you mean parts stores (AutoZone, Advanced, etc.. ) I wouldn't. The engines, they have re-man'd for them (just store fronts), are just built to passenger car/truck spec's. They may have a three year warrenty but they sure as h#ll do not warrenty the labor you pull it back out and put it back in. Plus in most cases if you let them know that you will be using it for commerical or heavy hualing the may cut that warrenty down to as little as 6 months.

Now if you mean Jasper or someone who BUILDs engines, & garrenties them for 3 years, yep, That's what I do..... ..

If it were I, I'd be for dropping in a Goodwrench 350. It will bolt right in there and you gain the ponies.
