Hi all,

I have barked up the wrong tree twice in my search for a tractor to fit my needs. I am not partial to any particular brand, but do want to be able to get parts. Here is what I envision:

I own about 5 acres, and like doing projects.. remodeling, trenching etc. I would like to get a tractor with a 3-pt hitch and pto so I can use the variety of implements available. I need a front end loader and would like to get forks and a bucket. The thing that is giving me trouble is that I want a backhoe. I would like to be able to dig down 5 ft or so, but all the small tractors I have found either don't have adequate power (Ford 8N w/sherman backhoe) or you can't remove the hoe and have a usable 3-pt (Case 530 backhoe). I am guessing I need somewhere between 40 and 90 hp to run all that I might need, but beyond that, I just don't know where to look. Would something like a JD 3020 or 4020 be the way to go? Any other suggestions or comments would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Darren McLaughlin

Yeah a friend of mine had a 4020 with a loader on it that we moved some steel beams with.. worked pretty slick and was small enough to get around easily...

Have you considered a skid loader? There are hoe attachments for them. A skid steer and a tractor would give lots of versitility.

I beleive Alamo makes a 3 pt. mounted back-hoe unit, mounts on standard 3 pt. arms and can be removed to expose the fully functional rear end of the tractor of your choice. I'd suggest a big, heavy tractor like a 1755 Oliver or something along those lines, maybe even a 1855, something in the 80-100 HP range if it's for a lot of back-hoe use. 60 hp could get you by though, like a 1650-1655 Ollie.

If the backhoe is the only hang up, I'd buy the tractor you allready like and just find a used one of those trailered backhoes. Then you can just drop a pin in the drawbar, push or pull the thing around and pull the pin when you're done. Plus, if the neighbor needs some custom work done, you can pull it behind your pickup. my 3 cents.

I agree with Rod, rent the back hoe. Unless you're in the business, the back hoe will sit alot more than being used. A smaller tractor will fit your needs. I have a small ford 1710 4x4 for my 25 acres. Works good for me. If I need help trenching, I'll call the neighbor. Craig

Yeah, I have considered the rental route, but we are going to be adding on to our house.. rebuilding and adding on to at least 1 barn... tearing out 1 driveway and putting in another.. running underground power and water etc etc. Rental would kill me on price, plus I really like the convenience of being able to save loads of time using something that I probably would not be able to justify renting. Just the other week, I had to move a tree.. took my like 5 hours by myself, but with a backhoe it would have taken a small fraction of that time. It's probably a good thought for most people though. I can imagine there are pleanty of guys running around with 10x the tractor they would need. I'll definately put more thought into thinking smaller though.

Running the risk of getting flamed by all of the V8 owners out there, I'll suggest that you think small.

Remember you can always trade up. In the meantime, you don't want the machine to own you because you spent so much on it, so why not get a toy which will do half, or three-quarters of the things you'd like to tackle?

The cost of a couple of hours of backhoe rental might not be too bad, and you can enjoy the other toys bought cheaply.

I have a Ford 800 series with a front end loader. I have a International Harvester 3 pt. Backhoe Attachment for it. It has about 45 hp. The tractor has plenty of power and it is still not Huge. I use it daily with a varity of implements and it has been very dependable even with its origional 6v starting system. When I have needed a part, they have been relativly inexpensive and VERY Avaliable. I would highly reccomend this setup. Just my thoughts...

Sounds like a good case for justifying more than one tractor. Heck with what your saying you need,
I think I could talk the wife into three or four tractors. Then you can leave one hooked to each implement. (Grin) Brokenwrench

Gp to the dealer most of your neighbours work with and like, tell him what you need, and also make it clear you are on a budget(if you are). There are good usable, 3 pt hitch backhoes available, but pricey. A 4020 on 5 acres is the proverbial sledghammer nutcracker. Again, tell your dealer about 30 hp would do it. Good luck and try for one of the major brands.

Money wise, I am looking in the 6k to 9k range. I was talking with my unlce who is an auctioneer earlier and he said he thought an international 806 or something about like it would be a good tractor for what I was thinking. He says that the IH parts tend to cheaper than the JD parts, and also that the IH had better hydraulics than the JD of the same vintage. I also like the idea of the hydrostatic drive when running it as a loader tractor.

Picked up a good book on IH this evening called "International Harvester Tractors 1955-1985" by Ken Updike. Seems really informative with good useful info.isbn 0-7603-0682-6 if anyone is interested. I was surprised at the variety of tractor books, and tractor restoration books they had at the upity coffee bar bookstore.. maybe that's why the prices seem to have gone up recently... everyone needs a tractor to put in the garage of the 1/2 acre suburban house.

I agree with Casey about Ken Updike (sp?) and his vast knowledge of IH products. Other than his book, most of the tractor books at the book/latte' store you mentioned are long on pictures and short on facts.

No kidding.. well I guess like all the other boards here, the farmall board is well stocked with experts. After looking though that book Ken wrote last night, I like the looks of something like an International 656 or 806.. I'm just uncertain of the true size when looking at a picture in a book. What is the smallest diesel international with 60+hp, power steering and a class 2 hitch? Is it really important in terms of versatility to get a dual speed pto 540/1000?

My local dealer had a IH 656 with loader & grapple on the lot last time I was there. It's still on his used web listing. I bought a new MFWD Zetor from him last year. Excellent shop to do business with.
