My experience has been to keep the belt as tight as possible. I was replacing about a belt a year until I started using a car jack to tension the idler pulley-current belt"s on year 3 and I hit my share and your"s of sticks and rocks. I do use Woods belts.

Daniel, the Woods belts are better. My father-in-law had an auto part store and I tried running belts that he matched up, but couldn't get them to hold up. I had to adjust them every time I mowed. He did match up the idler bearings and saved me a lot of money, his was around $5 each. If there is a Motion Industries in your area, they can match them up. I don't know if you have looked, but Woods has a website with service and parts maunuals too.

Question one is are you buying OEM belts or "cheaper" aftermarket belts (which may not have the Kevler cords)? The older RM59"s used a compression spring to tension the belt, later ones used a tension spring. You need to keep proper tension on the belt or it will start bouncing under load and hitting guard and frame parts. Most of the stretch in a new belt is in the first 4-5 hours of operation so you may have to adjust your spring several times till the belt breaks in. Second put new bearings in your idlers, it won"t cost thet much, and you can"t spin them by hand fast enough to see if they"re starting to get a "catch". Just bought the two today for my RM59-3 and it was less than $40.

Not to sound like a smarta$$ but you might consider cleaning up the area where you are going to mow and popping the clutch with an implement attached is never a good idea.

I have a RM 660 that I bought to replace a Caroni. In my opinion the Woods is a POS in comparison. The idler and spring is a Rube set up to begin with and it takes 3 men and a monkey to replace the belts on the dadburned thing. But, as the other fellow mentioned, good belts have Kevlar cords and are just about bulletproof. I just bought one and paid $40 for it. Unarmed robbery in my estimation, but it should last.

the belts are ordered from TISCO and sent to napa where i pick them up. cost is about $32. The previous owner said he had it for 10 years and had never put a new belt on it. Now they just keep brewaking. I have no idea to if the belts have kevlar but when i order more I will check. THanks guys. We have a driveline befco mower that gets alot of abuse from rocks sticks bailertwine and that thing is virtually industrictable. Thanks alot for the info.
