Funny you mentioned that. I recently bought a 4230 with a 404 cu in engine. It had a 1 7/8 ID outlet on the muffler along with a 31" pipe. Thought it was restrictive as you could put your hand in the exhaust outlet at pto rpms and it was a solid stream of gas. Took the muffler off and the inlet was over 3" and I thought..... who's foolin whom. The manufacturer of the engine (one Deere engineer) decides that proper breathing for the engine is 3+ inch exhaust, and another Deere engineer decides that he is going to make the tractor quiet so he strangles the engine to quieten it down.....but it didn't do much good; still was loud. Since the engine is running hotter than I want it to, under pretty good load with the A/C on, and all the other things have been tended to, the only thing left was restrictive exhaust to contribute to engine heat. Tried to get a muffler for a 4240 as it had a larger outlet but the muffler mfgr suggested a straight pipe instead. So yesterday UPS stops by and drops off a beautiful straight chrome stack that is the same diameter all the way as the hole in the exhaust manifold (over 3") and 50 something inches long with a flange on the engine end. Put it on and it looks great sitting in front of the cab. Cranked her up and it was loud, but not that loud and the soundguard cab blocks a lot of it, plus I wear ear plugs anyway. The engine it'self makes as much noise as the exhaust; especially the fan. The sound is good and solid and the pipe is less vision restrictive than the muffler. So now at PTO rpm's I put my hand in the exhaust and I feel pulses..... YEAH! We're breathing now. Can't wait till I can get a load on her and see if it does the job. I'm saving the old stuff in case I have to go back for some reason. My 2c Mark
