I always wondered. What exactly would happen if you put gas in a diesel tractor and ran it? What would happen if you put diesel fuel in a gas tractor and ran it?
Anything serious?

Why would anybody want to do that?

In the Missouri National Guard we were on our way to Fort Hood Terxas with a convoy. One of the drivers in a M800 (Dodge with 318 gas) saw that the tank was low and poured in a 5 gallon jerry can of diesel and the engine spark knocked terribly and when we got to Ft. Hood the engine had to be replaced. If it had been filled up with gasoline and diluted the diesel fuel it would most likely not hurt it. My old Mercedes 190D owmers manual said in cold weather use 10% gasoline in extermely cold weather.

It seems like pure gas in a diesel would predetonate and all h*ll break loose. I can't believe that it would just run rough. Or a sparkie could set off diesel unless it was hot and finely atomized. But, if that is what y'all have seen, wow. I hope to never find out with mine.

The wife put just under a gallon of gas in my Dodge Cummins (35 gallon tank). I just told her to fill it up WITH DIESEL and it ran just fine.

I s'pose it all just depends on what you're trying to do (or not do?).... If you accidentally put a gallon (or so) of gas in your diesel tank (or vice-versa), I'd say "don't sweat it". If this is a general "I wonder what would happen, if....." question, then... There ya go....

Neighbor's daughter filled up their 6.9 Ford with gas- It has some diesel in the tank, but probably wound up being 80% gas or more. Used about a quarter tank before complaining to Dad that it wasn't running well. He drained and refilled, with no ill effects. He did comment that the gas sure cleaned up the injectors and system- It ran better after the episode. Did make me smile about always hearing that even a drop of gas in diesel would cause calamatous damage.

A guy I worked for as a kid told his son to gas up his John Deere A. The son, (about 12 at the time) put about a half tank of diesel in it before he realized what he was doing and stopped.

It ran fine, started a little hard and smoked a lot, but he never drained it out, just diluted it some. Don't know of any harm it caused, but then those were low compression engines and it was summer and it was hot weather. Might have been a different story in colder weather.

I wouldn't want to try it with a modern gas engine.

Done it both ways,

Nothing happens; they just belch, die and won't run 'til ya get 'em cleaned and straightened back out.

Diesel in a gas tractor will run poorly and develop little power. Put gas in a diesel tractor and it will run extremely hot, damaging the engine. May also twist off the injector pump drive shaft, since the gas provides no lubricity. Hired help did that to my JD4430 years ago, but got by with just draining fuel, replacing filters, repriming. Did not run it too long, came to ask if I had diesel fuel in the red pickup tank, and had gas in the green tank. Tech said if it had been the 4020, likely the pump shaft would be toast.

Diesel would explode. Gas engine, would not run, then a carb rebuild or good cleaning.

IMHO,

Gasoline in a diesel does not explode per say. I had grabbed the gas can by mistake when my 2-53 Detroit started missing when blowing snow. It smoothed out but sounded much different. I filled the tank the rest of the way with diesel making about a 30/70 gas diesel mix ratio. Went right back to blowing snow with no problems.

I have run my lawn mower on diesel by mistake. I realized it was diesel in the tank and decided to just burn it out as long as it was running ok. It wont start if you shut it off though.

i always have added 3 gallons of gas to the 275gallon diesel tank after we fill it and 3 gallons of diesel to the 275 gallon gas tank it makes the diesels start better and the gas jobs run a little cooler with some more lubracant i was taught this by a 93 year old man 3 days before he passed away always added some diesel to his 39 ford that runs perfict and has never been rebuilt i think the spedos been aroung 3 times now on that
