From what I hear the Vanderburgh County Fair in Evansville IN is not going to allow the antique tractor parade drivers to have a rider, or riders on board with them. Any one else heard the same thing for there show or fair. My opinion is I will abide by the rules even though it bothers me that I cant take my daughter for a ride in the parade. Also I own a prarie tractor and at most shows they require 2 people to be on them so that you can see. I guess they didnt plan for that?

I understand your frustration C.R. . I am the parade chairman for our show. No riders except that a seat has been provided or the tractor may require 2 or more operators like the steam engines and some of the old big gassers. This rule has been brought on by the insurance companies and just plain common sense. We do allow younger drivers with a permit signed by mom,dad or the legal guardian, but even then common sense indicates that you do not turn a 3 year old loose with a 50 hp tractor (we've been asked!).

The other issue beyond caring for your child or yourself, is that the sponsoring organization has to protect the safety of the crowd. In this litigious society this responsibility will preclude allowing riders.

My sole recommedation is to have a cart, wagon or sulky that can be pulled behind the tractor, or install a second seat like the europeans do.

There are two sides to this issue.

When I took over managment of the parade at our local show it was a mess. Among other things no rules. I didn't really want to do it because of the problems enforcing them but I made up a simple set of rules for being able to drive around the show grounds. The one that applies to your comment is as follows

"Riders are only allowed on a secure seat or platform and/or standing behind the rear axle of vehicle and any towed implements."

The others appied to being able to maintain control and Young drivers having someone along to help if they got in trouble.

I did this after (among other things) watching a kid being sent off through the parade on a F20 and he could barely reach the clutch. Dad rode with him part way through the staging area and then got off and sent him on his way. Scared the _ out of me.

Had a couple of years of real dificulty with enforcement. I wasn't going to allow any exceptions and caught a lot of greif for that. Had to get after a fellow board member and good friend. I am now off that board but must have done something right because they are still using the rules I wrote.

I know your kid may be safe but when one person goes through the next nut thinks it would be ok to have 6 people sitting on fenders and have another 3 all standing on the drawbar and maybe another 6 on the hood. I exagerate but hopefully you see my point.

So please Chances R consider the fact that someone is trying to see to it that your daughter and any others see a long and healthy life with all their limbs.

Off my soap box now!!

jt

I understand the need for such rules and I think for the most part that those rules are a very good idea, but it sure puts a crimp on trying to include the wife and grandkids in this great hobby of ours.

We experienced a similiar "rule" in our last "tractorcade" with the rules being presented by the local sheriff/police division.
Our particular "out" was that we have a bench-seat with a back and foot rest, built for the three-point hitch. The deputy seemed impressed when he inspected the tractor/"rumble seat" and approved us for driver plus two riders.

1 seat equals 1 rider, now if you have 2 seats then they might allow the second rider,

me and a girlfriend dont fit well on my B when we blindfold race so I dont suspect it would be good to be running in a parade with an extra person trying to stand on the drawbar and axle...

I notice that all most all tractor trail rides are NO RIDERS NO EXEPTIONS
