Here in Western, Pa. it got up to 90 degrees on Sat. I started raking some horse hay about 11 am and began baling at 1 pm. About the time I started loading at 2 pm, that 90 degrees about knocked me over. At 50 I guess I am on the down hill side of things, because I can remember that a couple of years ago, that wouldn't have bothered me in the least.

Yesterday was going to be a great day to throw square bales..... so I thought. Usually I enjoy the strenuous workout but yesterday I was just draggin. My goal was 1000 bales, started Saturday evening, finished loading 200 at 11pm. Unloaded 100 by myself in the barn the next morning, then one guy showed up to help on the other 100. Called several more helpers but only one other showed. Still with 3 I thought we could get something done. Not so, loaded and unloaded another couple of wagons, and finally got 2 more loaded and backed in the barn. A few more than 600 total. The temp was in the mid 90s it just was a bad hay day. Oh well maybe another 400 in a few days, if not Ill wrap it all up. By the way, Im only 25, full time farmer, so no age excuse for me. I do prefer no shirt no hat and no gloves which Im sure is against all logical thinking but its how I do it.

I must be over the hill, just signed up for SS but back in mid 70's I had heat stroke from mowing hay and that same year Grandpa and Cousin got overcome by heat (not as bad as me) while loading on wagon, next year we got a baler with kicker on

Well, I'm 62 and I just gave up yesterday afternoon. Temp in low 90's and haze so thick you could almost cut it. Finally went in and lay down with the fan turned on me. And all I was doing was installing soffit, nothing real strenuous like pitching bales, mowing away hay or piling green lumber off the end of the saw like I used to do in my younger days. I've spent lots of years and hours working out in the sun and then my wife can't understand why I don't want to go out and sit on the deck in the sun! Don't get me wrong; I love summer but sometimes it's just better to kick back in the shade!

I'm not that old yet but, I'm working on it everyday. Not trying to bash you older folks but your skin has changed if you are over the age of 60 you are particularly susceptible to dehydration. Its not the heat thats getting you its that your skin dries out quicker then before. When do you have a problem? If you stop sweeeting you are in trouble. Stop and Drink more water! other symptoms-->

Thirst
less frequent urination dry skin (pinch your skin on the top of your hand, see how long takes to return)
fatigue
light headedness
dizziness
confusion dry mouth increased heart rate and Breathing (feels like your head going to explode) fever (stop drink more)


Sports drinks are good they replace salts and fluids that your body needs. Drink more!

My wife and my age stopped most of my "sweeeting"; didn't know drinking water would help; never heard it called that; guess it's a regional thing. LMAO..... ..sorry, couldn't resist..... .....

At age 35, I was still racing dirt bikes. 39, I was riding a moutain bike about 40 miles a week, on hilly trails behind the house. 41, I was diagnosed with diabetes. Had to quit all the extra-cirricular activities. 45, I bought a round baler, and quit doing so many squares to take away some of the "load". 47, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Still battling that demon.

In less than 12 years, I went from being 10' tall and bullet-proof, to pre-paying for my funeral.

You just never know.....

Like the old saying goes, "If I'd known I was gonna live this long, I'da took better care of myself when I was younger".

Damn John, we (at least I) didn't know about the pancreatic cancer; hang in there. Approaching 61; family history of colon cancer; supposed to go next month for my (first) colonoscopy. Only one fellow who posts on here that I've ever laid eyes on, but I've come to appreciate a bunch of you..... .....

Just want to say don't worry about your colonosocpy. I have had two. It is over before you even know you had it. Just relax and let them do their thing. they give you a bit of a seditive and off you go. Next thing you know they tell you you are done. Totally painless, nothing to it. To everyone, get checked if you need to, don't fear the procedure.

Thurlow, went in last year for mine, cut out some pollops, no cancer, no big deal. The crap they make you drink to flush your system beforehand is worse than the procedure. Another necessary evil to getting older. Get-er-done and good luck, Harley

Well I wasn't gonna say nothin' but it seems we all all in the same boat. I've been havin' dizzy spells but went and had my blood pressure checked and it is perfect. Guess I just can't take the heat anymore. And they are forcasting upper 90s today maybe 100 and I gotta plant feed. Yup, I'm wearing a big straw hat and a denim jacket. If I don't show up this evening somebody come hunting me; k?

spent three hours yesterday weeding garden and flower beds in the ninty plus heat and gave up at 58 i must be getting old too, can remember when we baled hay in s.e.iowa all afternoon and it didnot bother us.

Jed, I feel the same way...but I am a few years older. Here is South East Texas it has been real hot for this time of year. I am like Mike...done had part of my nose removed and skin off my cheek used to replace it. That sun will get ya.
I changed rear tires last weekend. Spent about as much time in the shade drinking iced cran-grape juce as working. That stuff tastes great when you build up the heat. Take it easy...you get down and nothing will get done. Think about it.

Morning Jed;Down here in La.you got to bring water with you everywhere you go,and drink about 16 oz. every half hour.My 24 year old had a heat stroke about 3 years ago welding some pipe gates and fences.He ran out of water at around noon but kept on going.If it was'nt for the Good Lord,we would have lost him.You guys be careful out in that heat and pace yourselves. I've got some great looking "splotches" on my face right now- from the dermatologist freezing pre-cancerous things off with liquid nitrogen. He called it "fair-haired farmboy" syndrome. I always wear brimmed hats now in the sun, and use an umbrella on the tractor for summer work. Like the earlier poster said about heatstroke being cumulative, so is skin cancer- you gotta keep getting them removed. Oh, well, I guess its better than the alternative (in this case, the alternative is living in a condo in town).

Hang in there fellows. It will get worse before it gets better. I guarantee it. I don"t get out much any more, but always tell wife where I am going and I carry a cell phone in my pocket in case I get into some trouble that I can"t handle by myself. Keep those caps and hats on. Delbert

Me too. Working yesterday on draggin' the old swather out of the weeds in the heat, I thought sure I was gonna drop.

I just rack it up to being out of shape and kinda look foward to more of the same. :>)

Careful boys that heat has a cumulative effect over the course of your life. I stroked first time at 9 yrs old standing in line to see the Appolo 11 capsule and then seems like at least once every five years since. Now I don't go outside in the sun for more than 5 min with out a hat or where I know some one will find me. If I go to the back farm or to the far end of this little slice of heaven I tell someone where I will be. Got a sister and my Grandmother dropped like rag dolls in hot weather too.
