Has anyone ever heard of using a brown paper bag for replacing paper gasgets. Someone mentioned it once and I just wondered if it would work

Never used brown paper bags but have often used boxboard (cornflakes boxes, poster paper, etc) for gaskets and it works fine. Sometimes I use it as is, other times I coat the surfaces with Permatex gasket cement. I HATE silicone, absolutely hate the stuff.

I tried the cereal box gasket some years ago. What a joke! The oil soaked right through the stuff. Use genuine gasket material instead.

I had a seasoned mechanic help me on a Detroit in a truck and needed a water pump gasket which wasn't in the kit. He took a manilla file folder held it over the part and took a small ball pien hammer and tapped out the outline of the gasket. The gasket punched out almost factory like. The gasket held.

Brown paper bag, the cover of a Sears catalog, even the cardboard back from a legal pad or such. All will work in a pinch, sometimes better than an exact replacement.

NAPA sells gasket material by the foot why use something that's going to fail and have to redo it again.

Have used lots of paper and single ply cardboard over the years, and haven't had one fail yet.

Started using brown paper bags, cornflake boxes, and such to make gaskets in a pinch back in the 1950"s. I don"t recall any that failed. Just need to check the thickness of the gasket being replaced. You can not replace a 1/16" or 1/8" thick gasket with a .007" paper bag.

Right, the thinner the gasket, the flatter the surfaces have to be.
