I have been running a Case 2388 combine and prior a 1660 for the most part really like them but I think they wear out fast. My neighbor runs Gleaners and says the tin and augers and conveyor chains will last twice as long in a Gleaner. Also thinking of trying Deere just because they are so dominate in my area and have 3 good dealers within 35 miles of me. Also several good Case dealers nearby but the Gleaner dealers are not quite as reliable, but my neighbor with the Gleaner says you don't need a good dealer because they never fail. I want to try something other than red,what should I do?

If you can do a lot of the maintenance and repair yourself then the Gleaners really shine. If not then it likely doesn"t matter much what you drive because a good dealership will be more important to you than the color of the machine. Unfortunately, the Gleaner dealership network has never been as strong as the competition,at least thats the situation here on the Canadian prairies. Hasn"t stopped me from using Gleaners though, we"ve owned sixteen of them over the last thirty years and never had a major problem with them.

The old Gleaners always had the ease of making repairs going for them. Are the new ones that way too? And can anyone tell me what the market shares are for the companies making combines?

I can't speak for other areas, but in this area I would bet that the CaseIH rotor is comanding at least 65% of the total market, and we sell them as far away as a couple hundred miles with those same costomers coming back when its trade time again.

DP you say your green blooded but sell red . Are you a Case IH dealer? Do you farm? With green tractors and red combines then?

Don't have enough to be called a farmer, but have a few acres of beans. I collect John Deere, and have turned down red in the past. I sell at a CaseIH dealership. I am a true believer in the CaseIH combines. If I had the need, that would be my choice. I might add their tractors of the last 15+ years are no slouch either. In that respect I'm not putting the green ones down either. In todays market, if it isn't good, it will be gone!

I'm in north east Kansas. The Dealership is Bruna Implement Co. Web site is www.brunaimplementco.com if you'd like to visit it. My collection is mostly run of the mill tractors similar to what I've worked with most of my life. Oldest is a 1935 A on rear steel, and newest is a 1959 630 that was dads. Have 16 at present in different stages of restoration. 5 A's, 4 G's, 3 B's, 60, 70, 620, and the 630. I might add I've bought 4 of them from the dealership. One of the G's is a GM that spent the summer of 46 on the Deere experimental farm at Moline. Didn't know that till after I had it bought. Plans till I found that out were to part it.

DP we are getting off subject but I love the old tractors. I like your collection. I have an F-20 that is just being finished full restoration. An H, A SMTA-diesel and John Deeres 38 A and a 38 B fully restored. I am looking for a 38 G to go with the A & B.

We're on a subject I can visit about all day.Started out without much direction, but things just start fitting together. In 38's I have the A, B, and G. If I can come up with the right 39 A, I'll have most of the different styles, as I have the 35, 38, 45, 49, and 52. Put with that the 60, 620, and 630 were the successors of the A. G's, I have the 38 G, 46 GM, 49 G, AND 52 G, then the 53 model 70. B's are 38 45, and 52.

How about this ? I would like to trade my SMTA diesel for a 70 or newer 4020 powershift. Any ideas of someone who would be interested in such a trade? Now a dumb question ----is your 38 G for sale or do you know where there is one?

Its not for sale, but I will keep you in mind if I hear of one. Excuse the dirty tractor, but this is it. We get 4020 power shifts in now and then. I would be glad to let you know when one comes in. I'm guessing you are wanting a diesel. Also I never asked where your located? Don

Hi Threshar. I sell Case IH, and in the last few months we have taken in several of the big gleaners in trade for mostly 2388's. Also John Deere 9500's and 9610's. The gleaners we have taken in are two R72's, two R62's, R60, two N7's, and a few smaller. I'm not going to start a war here, but the message in in there somewhere! What is it that makes you want something different? I'm as green blooded as they come, but I've seen the light here.

Say Gleaner around here and you will get laughed at. Seems to be about equal between Red, Green, and Yellow. We have the twin rotors and wouldn't go to anything else... definately not a conventional machine ever again. Those 88 series are good machines. Quite a few around here and haven't heard of too many problems so you may want to keep that one.

Just the opposite around here, most of the gleaners are in the fencerow, if you look really hard you might see a JD, case ih is dominant. I really think it all depends on the dealer, and how willing he is to bargain on the price and the service provided after the sale.

Hey Thresher,

I don't know nothin' from nothin', but they all will break down; it's just the nature of the beasts.

My personal choice are the Gleaners also, but you are totally right in your thinking in that when a combine goes down, the only thing that matters is if you can get parts or not and if you can get 'em in a hurry, because it can mean the differece between getting the crop or losing it.

Better follow your own gut feeling on this one and how things are in your area. :>)
