Skid steer for barn cleaning

This fall, I'm going to be shopping for a used skid steer to use to clean my main barn. It's a 200 year old dairy barn, that will be used to house my adult Nubian goats. Eventually, I'll have at least 100 goats in there. This fall, I'll have at least 30 in the main barn. It's just too time consuming (and back breaking) to continue to clean out their living area by hand, so I need a skid steer. The skid steer must be as small as possible. The head clearance in parts of the barn is not much more than 6 feet, and there are support posts in many areas.

Any suggestions about models and manufacturers of skid steers, as well as how to operate them in this situation would be appreciated, since I know just about nothing about them, other than I know lots of other farmers who use them for this purpose.

Thanks!!

Well depending on how much room you have you will probably want one of the older smaller ones. I have a bobcat 371 here on the place that works well and it is almost small enough to fit in a pickup. Not very hard to learn to run one but it takes time to get to where you can really make it do what it can do. Just make sure it has the cage and never run it with out it. I've heard of to many people looseing there head becuase of takeing the side panels off

Toro makes a track layer (Dingo)that is small and has many attachments available (including bucket). I've seen them work and are quite nice. You walk behind to run(not a rider).

Bobcat makes some little ones too. I seen one walkbehind Bobcat that wasnt"t much more than a motorized wheelbarrow. A Bobcat is different to run then a Case. Bobcat steers with the levers, and raises and loweres and tilts and untilts with your feet. Kinda a$$ backwards to my way of thinking if you"ve been using a tractor with loader. Some guys who run them a lot can make them do anything, anywhere. What ever you do, if you get one leave the ROLP on and the side screens in it.

When the concrete guys put the floor in my 30x50 shop they had an experienced skid steer operator and it was magic what he could do in that building with it and a pile of sand.

Home farm has a Case 1840 that is about 5 foot high at top of ROPS. 2 cylinder engine-Onan I think, 40 inch wide bucket exchanged for a 38 or 36 wide, tires were replaced with narrow profile tires- this was done to fit through doors. Neighbor -former small dairy operator- had a narrower model with single cylinder Tecumseh engine, possible 1636?, twin joystick levers for steering and bucket controls.

Be careful if you are considering buying a used machine. 1500 hours is a LOT of hard hours for a skid steer. Every move you make with them goes thru the entire drive train.
In my excavating business, I always bought new or a "demo" with a "new" warranty.
