1967 JD 112 with the HH100 tecumseh misses when placed under load, like mowing grass. It runs great in the shop, but put it to work and it back fires and acts like it is running with the choke on. take the load off, and it will clear up. It has about 70 - 75 psi compression, new head gasket (old one leaked and I noticed the the piston & valves were carboned up some), the spark is an orangeish color, and when it misses I cant tell a difference in the spark color. I rebuilt the whole machine 18 years ago and ran great, but it sat for the last 10 years. I was 12 and this was my first major project by my self. It is something stupid iam sure I just hve not had the time to really get into it. Any thoughts?

Backfires and runs like the choke is "ON". You mean it smokes from too much gas? Back fire is usually from too lean. If too lean look at float height and restrictions in gas flow. If too rich, look at air filter and restrictions in the air flow. Orange spark could be weak. I have had small engine coils get damp and reduce their spark. Lay then out in hot sun for a week. BTW, that coil is priced at about $124.00... I needed one last year. Bought a junker engine to get one. My first advice is to get another spark plug. Could very well be that.
