HVAC guy got here yesterday morning about 9 and installed our A/C. Couldn't have come at a better time. Now we can actually be COMFORTABLE and escape the heat! Also got an air-to-air heat pump - complete matched Trane system. Wife was very happy! Wow, A/C AND running water in the same year! Sorry for the post - just HAD to tell some one!

Has your wife started tinkering with the thermostat yet?

Doing it at this very moment. It's one of the programable ones, but she wants one even fancier so she can play more!

What to do now is purchase a 2nd thermostat and mount it in a hidden place the wife won't find. Then run the control wires to the hidden stat. The wife can tinker to her hearts content and you can keep the house comfortable. She will warm or cool and be comfortable by what she dials into the decoy stat.

I can remember laying in bed at night during the summer - windows open with a fan on me - still sweating and sticking to the sheets!! Never had AC until about 20 years ago - I love it!!!

Galen - ENJOY (and say ahhhhh hhhh)

Galen, Now you must know how elated the Missus was to learn that I planned on spending a portion of the projected profits this year to install inside plumbing. According to her, she is getting pretty tired of having to trudge outside to both fetch water, and dispose of it. Next thing, she will be petitioning for a replacement for the wringer washer, even though I did buy her a new clothes dryer last year. At last glance, the clothesline and clothspins should last another couple seasons.

Yup - both the wife and I grew up without running water (her dad still doesn't have it). When we finally got hooked up to Rural Water in February, my wife petitioned for a dishwasher. I told her "Why should I BUY a dishwasher, when I MARRIED one?. When I came to, we made a trip to the appliance store ..... .....

I know how you feel!
I just got through buying a 15,000 BTU window unit for the cabin I"m building. I don"t have permanent power yet, so I"m relying on a generator at present.
Anyway, the little wife really wants to help build this thing, but can"t tolerate heat very well.
Last Sunday, while I was stapling insulation bewteen the rafters, I looked over (things had gotten quiet), to see my "helper" lying on a cot, sound asleep with that air conditioner just humming along---truly a "priceless" moment....

I sympathize with anyone that does not have A/C in this kind of weather. Personally, I prefer the windows open and fresh air coming in, but when that "fresh" air feels like a blast furnace, I will close the windows and turn on the a/c.

We designed our house so that you could raise the windows and the air could blow across the bed, helped along by the attic fan; bedrooms were all on the south side and that is the side for the prevailing wind here in the summer.

Problem was, the windows were too short and after building the thing, a neighbor came over one day and remarked that the house looked funny.

Yes it did. I had arranged the windows to compliment the interior happenings with no regard for the outside; never occurred to me beins this was the first house I designed and the family built. NONE of the windows were even with the top of the doors like professionally built houses and yes, it did look odd.

Great and we all know if the wifeeee is happy the house is happy.

We went for 3 years in our self built house before we had enough money to install AC. Dunno how we did it..... .dunno how she did it.

Well - we had this house (old farm house) moved on here Thanksgiving 2003. Put the furnace in January 2004, got running water 14 Feb 2005, HVAC guy came back yesterday. Total bill for all, including all new ducts, Heat Pump, furnace, exchanger, lines, installation, etc was $5000. About 1/2 of what others wanted and his guy drove 5 hours to get here from Mexico, Missouri (of course he is my cousin)! We had four window A/C's up til now - they suck just about as much money as this will!

Looks like you are moving right along. It's done now (your house) but the thing that gives window ac a bad rap is that they are usually used in uninsulated houses.

Take a well insulated house like mine, I have window units and only use the ones where we are living. Since the loop from evap to cond and back is short with no ducts in a hot attic, cooling effeciency is great, including that fact that the window unit has a condensate tub and a slinger ring on the compressor fan (water evavporation cooling of the condenser coil) which makes for a whopping big decrease in the light bill..... and when one dies, it's a couple hundred bucks and an hours work and you are back in business.

Yeah - we insulated the attic, Put batts in the walls where we could and blew in insulation in the rest. Installed new window and doors, and will be installing siding this fall. The ceilings were already lowered so we didn't have to do that.
This house is WAY better then the one we used to have. It had been added onto several times and air circulation was a problem. MUCH nicer here!
