Howdy, all.

I'm looking at putting brakes on our trailer. It's a 7,000lb 16' utility with twin 3500lb axles and 5 on 5" chevy-pattern hubs. I'm not sure the hubs that are installed are compatible with brakes, but if I have to replace them I will. What I'd really like are some general recommendations on what type of brakes I should look to install, what brands you guys like the most, and any good advice you might have. Comments on controllers would help, too.

As it stands, I'm mostly looking at putting electric brakes on both axles, but I can probably be persuaded to do otherwise. Y'all have always had some great advice in the past-- thanks for sharing with a newbie!

Northern Tool (www site) has some in their catalog. You might email them and yak for awhile about what you need.

Any brakes are better than none. Electric will be cheapest that's not that big a trailer you should be fine with them.

Hi Darren,

I would also get a price on complete new axles. A couple years ago, I priced a pair of Dexter 5000lb electric brake axles, complete with springs, $245eh.

Sell yours for $100eh. Why people pay that much for them I don't know.

Do a google search for Dexter axles, should be able to find what you want there. I can't remember the brand of controller I have, it works very good, but I think there are better controllers available now. I am sure that some others will know the best one to get.

there are disc brake kits that will bolt on and I would use a Hydrastar electric/hydraulic braking system, with compatable controller. I have used this on trailers up to 20000lbs. with excellent results.

BFO, isn't that electric/hydraulic system rather pricey? If it's what I looked into awhile back there was quite a bit of equipment that had to be installed on the truck. It probably is the ultimate braking system, far better than the electric only brakes, but most of us don't really need it.

no, the truck just gets an electric brake controller (one that is compatible with the Hydrastar) just like it was going to be used with an electric brake trailer. The electro/hydraulic unit is on the trailer. There are less problems with the system, and performance is better by far.

Electric brakes are cheaper and easier to install especialy if you don't have the controls. There are a couple of hydraulic brake types. Electric/hydraulic, vaccum/hydraulic and hydraulic surge type. I've used the electric with no problems. The hydraulic performe better, but unless you do a lot of heavy hauling, they are not needed.
