My Generac 5000 watt generator only puts out 60 volts. If I race the motor I can light a bulb but forget anything else. Any suggestions where to start?

there were some posts a while back about getting generator "excited" using corded drill plugged into the output, rotate drill either way while pushing trigger and get your hand away from chuck fast

Sounds like low excitation field strength.
I think Bob and B&D are on the right track.

One question though, was this generator apart or has it set without running for a long time?

Can you measure the DC excitation voltge being applied to the slip ring's brushes? Do you have a tach or frequency meter to be certain of rpms?

In these generators, typically, there is either a bridge rectifier, or 2 discrete diodes that produce the DC current needed to "excite" the rotating field. Hopefully, there is a problem in that area, as repairs there won't be too costly, compared to a defective rotor or stator winding.

Yes. Am told the diodes are on the board which is replaceable as a unit. Am hoping for suggestions to further diagnose it before $pending the fund$ needed for the board. Thanks for any help.

What's on the board besides the diodes... is it a simple affair, or an extremely complicated circuit board that probably contains a voltage regulator?

Could you post a picture?

Hi FD,

When you do post more info, put it over on the tool forum as it moves alot slower than this forum so it wouldn't get burried in the back pages before all answers can be considered.
