Hey Guys,

I know this one is coming from clear out in left field, but here's what I'm a gonna do.

Wheat crop came off this field last month. Ground, of course, was depleted of moisture and fairly hard due to the dry conditions out in this country.

I spread starter fertilizer and 9 days ago, I smacked it with the disk to knock down the weeds and loosen it up. THEN, IT WAS DRY; NO POINT IN PLANTING IT THIS WAY! And, I thought this season is over as far as planting the silly alfalfa.

Fast forward to yesterday and here come the rains. We've got 1/2" inch so far and looks to be an inch by Monday.

Just as soon as it dries out enough to get in the field, I'm going to plant this thing without any additiional tillage, just plant in there the way it is, then run the roller over it (teeth up) to insure seed contact.

I know the weeds are gonna absolutely boil up out of this field after this rain, but to heck with 'em. I'll just use 'em fer my "pre-established" cover crop. :>)

I don't care about the weeds now, cause I'm 5 to 6 weeks from frost time; if I can just get that alfalfa to take and establish itself, weed problem will be gone next spring due to the alfalfa.

Whadda think? :>)

Allan, I say "Go For It". I have never seen a 2 yr old weed. If you have 6 weeks before frost then it will take at least a week for new weeds to sprout, and 3 1/2 weeks to grow. so they don"t have much time to get very big or use all that much moisture. Also you will have some Voulenteer wheat to help cover and compete for the moisture that you have avaible during this late growing season. It will all depend on the soil condition and the rain you get in the next month and half.
I wish for you, that you had a Big sweep plow to help control weeds and get you a better seed bed.
It would also help conserve your moisture.
Hey I won"t be back on the board till Sunday PM.
Later,
John A.

Allan - You might want to think about setting your teeth just low enough to scratch the soil, thus putting your seed just below the surface (maybe 1/2"). Rear packer will firm the seedbed.

Would probably work better if you had matching tires on that disc ;)

Sounds like a plan to me. Never done it, so I can't tell you how it will work. At least you're getting something good out of this rain. I've got 350 acres of dairy quality alfalfa (or at least it was dairy quality) on the ground and we've gotten .9 inches so far. David

Go for it.....just remember....you got to ride it next year. Make it as smooth or as rough as you want. You can always top dress it with a dab more fertilizer and seed next spring!

Your posts remind me of that old Farmer Magazine column: "Song of the Lazy Farmer"...always looking for ways to skip a step.☺
Actually, I'd do the same...sounds like a workable plan.
PS: I remember my old ag teacher telling us that the best way to check the soil before planting alfalfa was to walk in the field. If you left visible footprints, it was OK to plant.
Good Luck

Hi Rau,

Yeah, I know. But, if there is one thing I've learned in these few short weeks in the "dry land" game, it is that conserving moisture is key to everything else.

I have a whole new respect fer these dryland guys. Uffda! What a way to farm!

Where's the button to turn on the water? :>(

I would have not tilled it in first place, put the alfalfa down in the seed tube furrow in those cases. I have my drill setup with 44 coulters on 15ft unit and it is same as discing effect and so I end up with very firm seedbed but enough loose soil for good seed to soil contact. they are spaced 4inches apart,so far it is really working slick, but I am still working on it as when I get done it will have for different seed boxes on it that way I can meter each seperatly so I don't have anymore sifting to the top of some seed when i mix.

why didn't you just no-till the alfalfa right into the stubble? it would save you alot of fuel and trips across that field. anything you can do to improve your chances of a profit man! just my humble opinion.

Amen Caseye. The machine if it exists in Nebraska is a John Deere zero till single disc drill. 510 i think. Wayyy to expensive for anybody to own, but rentable around here. But if you seed in the dust and it rains a bit you're in business too.

Hi Casey,

That is what I originally was planning one doing, but this ground was so derned hard that the little drill would never have penetrated.

Take my word on this one; pretty much the same consistency as cured cement. Each weed had came equipped with a small portable jackhammer.

But, it is all better now. :>)

Go for it. If you don't plant it, it won't grow.

Yeah,

After all the blood, sweat and tears I put into that rascal, it would be nice to see it actually do something. Ha!

If it fails all you'll be out is your seed. I'd go for it.

Allan;

Should work. Hope you get some rain after alfalfa is seeded and the frost holds off a week or so.

Git er done.
