When I drove a ryder leased truck and it was time for a service I could hit any shop and they had a hydrilic coupler on oil pan they would suck it right out of pan run it thru a few filters and dump it in the fuel tank . So in older diesels you could filter it and blend it and burn it the new motors will not handle it

My tire man get's most of mine, he uses it to heat his shop. I do use some here on the farm, it all depends on what it came out of.

I"ve got around 400 gallon in my storage tank now.The company that usually picks it up for free
now wants to charge me to take it.I"ve contacted a couple farmers that burn it in there shop furnaces, but they want you to put it in barrels,
make sure there"s no water and deliver it.I wonder if those auto lube places would take it.

Jacobus Environmental solutions takes ours. Less than 150 gallons and they charge a pickup fee. We're just happy to see it go and could care less as to its value. If you hold out 'til someone pays you, you'll need a LOT of storage.

It can be rerefined but unlike the "sludge " from the earth the used oil contains stuff like metal , heavy metals and sulphuric acid. But I agree, it should have some value.

We use a lot of used oil at our concrete batching facility as the used oil heater for this 7,000 sq ft building "eats" 8 gal/hour in the cold of winter. We pay 3 cents/gal to buy it from anyone willing to drop it off and have not had a problem getting it just because of DNR & EPA being so tough on getting rid of it. It is a cheap way to heat but is very high maintenance to keep it running clean. This oil has already been refined so has no value like the "sludge" coming outta the ground.

I would advise being careful about who you obtain oil from. There are folks out there using waste oil to dilute & get rid of hazardous stuff like PCB's. It could get real expensive, if you got hold of some nasty chemicals, mixed in the oil...

They busted a Russian group in Toronto that owned a chain of gas stations and a waste oil disposal company. The waste oil was filtered and blended with diesel and sometimes gasoline.

Safety Kleen picks up my used waste oil at the shop, does not charge anything for it, and after they get it on their truck, they are legally liable to the EPA for any spills or such. That is what convinced me to let them have it.

JT, I beg to differ that S-K is responsible for your oil after they pick it up. The Feds have a cradle to grave law that makes you responsible until that oil is either recycled or burned. Keep all of your records about amounts picked up and dates. An enviromental company in N.H. went belly up a few years back and they had been picking up oil from garages etc. completely legal and licensed for years. They had not however been disposing of the oil but had been storing it illegally in drums piled everywhere on their property. A buddy of mine was charged for his share of the cost of the cleanup. 7 drums of oil over a 5 year period cost him just over 20,000 dollars. You don't have much choice in the matter when the EPA comes knocking.

A waste disposal Co. here did that too. Went Bankrupt, ran off & left thousands of drums of unknown chemicals. EPA spent years cleaning things up, all at the expense of the ones that had sent the chemicals to the site. One local school district had to pay thousands for lab chemicals they had sent. Then, several people made the mistake of buying the land at a County Tax auction... They just bid, because it was cheap, did not even know where it was... It seems that the EPA would monitor these disposal companies, to make sure they are actually disposing of the chemicals, instead of just storing them.

Yep - it's yours until it's gone, don't matter whos truck it's on, whos tank it's in, whos facility it's on, or, potentially, what wetland it got spilled into. Be careful.

Just a little side bar, all storage tanks should be labled Used OIL not Waste oil.Waste Oil is a haz mat, used oil is not,at least that is what the EPA inspector told us.(he even gave me a hand full of decals to mark our 55gal drums with.)
