I need help, How do I determine if an older tractor like an 8n or Major Dielsel or some other tractor is able to be fitted with a modern tiller implement? I do not want to buy one nad then find out that it will not work. Sales people just want to sell me that new JD for 11,000.

Thanks for your help.

Derk

A John Deere 320,420,330,430,40 will work great with a tiller. They have a fairly slow 1st gear.Another way which I have done is put the tiller on my Ford Jubilee and then tow the tractor/tiller with another tractor idling in first gear. The ford ,of course,is reved up in neutral with P.T.O. engaged.Takes two operators tho works good.

I've tilled with an 8N without the aux transmission (Howard/Sherman). I just take two passes. If it is new ground, then plow or disk first. It can be done, just takes a bit more effort.

I would not get an 9N, 2N or 8N to run a tiller with unless they were fitted with the Howard gears. If you have ground that is the least bit hard you will be traveling forward faster than the tiller can do it`s job in. I have two 8N`s with Sherman Combo transmissions and even in their slow gear they both travel to fast to till correctly. They work great mowing but the tiller was sold years ago.

Any tractor with a 3-point hitch and a center-rear PTO shaft should hook right up to just about any tiller, other systems may require adaptors and such.

Bigger problem is finding an old tractor with a slow enough 1st gear, most pre-tiller era tractors are too fast, although they still do the job, just don"t pulverize in one pass like so many seem to want.

I prefer a pass with a field cultivator and a pass with a tiller behind my fast "51 case to just about anything else, maybe some deep tillage every decade or so. The cultivator finds all the obstructions that way, and the tilth is better.
