I have a 97 f250 with the 7.3 powerstroke. The engine just shuts off sometimes. It does'nt matter if you are driving or idling. It will restart fine. Anyone else had this problem?

The CPS folks have it right (Cam Position Sensor) I had the same problem. Went to thedieselstop.com and got good info which saved me a LOT of money since I was going to let the dealer do it ($120 vs $30 doing it myself) Very easy to do! Right up front.

BTW, I have a "97 F250 7.3 with 172,xxx miles and no problem except the CPS. Been a great truck.

And Silver Pig, WOW you sure got a different impression of thedieselstop.com than I got. Agree there are a lot of crazies out there (and some on this site, too!) but mostly they try to help and discuss issues just like our group of tractor guys do. I"ll admit, if I had to choose, I"ll take the tractor guys. Even so, the truck guys aren"t all that bad. THey just like to soup things up a bit. Heck, I might yet do it to my old beast.

Yup, Almost definatly your cps.I have changed the on in my 97 once already. I also had to unhook the fuel heater inthe filter bowl as it caused a similar problem. Easy fix. Go to thedieselstop.com for more help, great place for powerstroke info. Jim

thedieselstop.com HAS to be the most idiotic website in existence. Nothing but those who abused their vehicles to the point of destruction, then they whinge and moan about how Ford will not honor the warranty, or a complete bunch of high school kids dreaming of owning a diesel pickup, and also dreaming of how they can try to beat Ford out of its warranty, or a bunch of wannabee truck drivers, who are totally clueless about any vehicle and its maintainance, much less the ownership and responsibilities of owning any thing more than a pile of junk, not to mention the continual shilling for its sponsers, who are in the business of selling the add on parts that the idiots buy and install and wonder why it voids the warranty.
They were so proud of an article in some magazine on how to check the tire pressure.
What a bunch of fking idiots, absolutely and totally clueless.

That sensor can be replace at home in about 10 min. It can be bought on E-Bay or your local parts store. Most reliable place to buy is International.
