The times they are a changin! Most of the states are now insolvent (bankrupt). Therefore, anything that moves (your rig) is a target for revenue. The regs for Va are probably not the same as other states around it. Certainly, up here in NY, the Vampire state, they are not the same as in PA, etc. Running a rig in all forty eight, I can tell you, that things change from state to state; BUT, all of them are looking for money; MY money and YOUR money. (The points on the license are just extra rewards.) I spoke to our tractor club last winter about the DOT (Department of Tyrany) and how they probably would enforce the commercial regulations with us. Some members were so disgruntled they got a local NYS Police Commercial Vehicle Inspector to visit the club and share his knowledge. It was just about a complete replay of my discussion. Basically, up here in NY, if you are 101 miles from home, you are gonna get the big boy treatment. PLEASE!! I am not saying that this is fair or even just. Virtually all of the states are desperate for money; and they will take ALL of yours and mine, from which they can separate us. The fact that you may have a beautiful antique tractor or piece of machinery just like one that a DOT officer's Dad or Grandpa had just makes you a more likely candidate to be stopped and inspected; Sorry folks. Get your ducks in a row; DOT numbers, log books, and DOT cards, LEGAL chains and binders, flares, etc. It is easier, cheaper, and won't spoil, an otherwise good tractor show or pull. Be safe. best, Phil
