Yahoo news put this article up about an hour ago. Another source said the permission was good until 15 September. That effectively means it is good almost indefinitely. "But Officer, that red color has contaminated the last three fill ups."

WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service acted Friday to expand the nationwide supply of diesel fuel by letting more vehicles use fuel intended for farm equipment and government vehicles. The action allows commercial trucks and other vehicles to use special dyed diesel without paying a penalty excise tax. The dyed diesel fuel is used by farm, government and some off-road equipment, ordinarily not subject to federal excise taxes.

"Today's action is a relatively simple and straightforward step that will immediately increase the available supply of diesel fuel nationwide, which is especially needed in Gulf Coast relief efforts," said Treasury Secretary John Snow.

Wardner, I might be inclined to say that this is all and good, but my cynical side tells me that this may not serve farmers well at all, as they may well end up taking the brunt of such action. There is nothing to prevent the raising of off road fuel to on road prices, just to meed supply demands, thus putting more of the cost burdon on the farmers. There is a difference between off road and on road fuel for a reason, and that is that off road fuel is not required to pay the costs of highway upkeep, but if those revenues dwindle because on road vehicles are using untaxed off road fuel, then who is going to make up the tax deficit? I smell a potential rat somewhere, sorry.

in one since of the word I hate to see that.

our local co-op ran out of fuel for farm use already ( coal mine still gets there 8 semis a day from the same terminal)

we got caught working on repositioning our tank so it was empty... and cant get it filled.

now our supply can go to anyone--- even if we dont have any to harvest our crop.

oh well I hope that they at least have to still pay the tax... our roads sure are getting chewed up by the coal trucks
