Dump Truck into a Dump Trailer

Hey everyone,
I was wondering if anyone out there has ever turned a dump truck into a dump trailer?
If you have or know of a website detailing the process please reply to this.
It is a 1970ish Ford 600 series dump truck with a bad engine so we are going to turn it into a dump trailer.
One of the main questions I have is, should I power the dump cylinder from the tractor's hydraulics, or keep the hydraulic pump and power that with the tractor PTO?
It is a 5 yd. box and I am going to use it w/ either a MF 165, 265 or 1080 (1080 for any large loads).
Another question is how long should I make the trailer? Should I extend the length much past the box? I was thinking that by making the trailer longer it would put more of the load on the trailer axle and less on the drawbar?
Any hints, tips or answer will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have a project on the go.... If it was me, I think I would power the hoist form the tractor hydraulics, unless the hoist is a scope. The standard old scissor hoist should be fine. The scope will most likely require more oil than the tractor can supply. I'm not sure I understand what you plan to make the trailer from. A separate new trailer that you will mount the box on, or just cut the old truck frame up and use that. If it was me, I would probably strip the cab, engine, tranny, etc. Then, just cut and bend the frame rails in to make an A frame hitch out of the truck frame, if there's enough left of the frame to do that. Build up a hitch, plumb the hydraulics, and you're good to go. That's the quick and dirty. I wouldn't worry about changing the wheelbase around. The tractor drawbar can well handle any weight the front end of the old truck used to take. Just chop er off, and bend it together, and then sew it up with the welder. Just remember that the length of the A frame hitch will be determined by the rear wheel size on the tractor. The trailer must be far enough behind so that the wheels don't contact the A frame. However, the longer it is, the more weight that will be concentrated on the tractor's drawbar. Any other questions, just fire away.

I made a dump trailer out of an old Ford F350 that had a flat bed on it. I took off the cab and motor, bent the frame around and formed a A frame and welded a hitch to it and mounted a hoist under the flat bed. My neighbor helped me and we got it all done in one day. I power the hydraulics off the tractor (4010). I have to be careful and not overload it because of it likes to shove me around going down hills. Pretty simple job actually.

you assumed correctly,
I am in the process of stripping the cab and front end right now, and am going to cut it off and make an A Frame hitch,
I will probably have more questions for you as the project progresses.

I made one of them 10-15 years ago, using a frame from a 5-8 yard box. Had a St. Paul hoist, but I split the pump off and used just the cylinder by adding a cover plate where the pump was. It is plumbed with two hoses, used on a D17 and various JD tractors. Had to install a check valve in one line so it powers up with only the correct hose, and takes return oil with the other hose. There is also an interconnecting hose in the system- can't remember why I needed that. (Helps you a lot, huh?). I had only the frame of the dump body, so I made the flatbed out of 2+ inch oak planks, laid lengthwise- helps to unload rocks. Pto drive works ok too if you prefer that, but I had plaenty of hyd capacity on all the tractors, so did not use the pump. (Might be that the check valve is in the interconnecting line?) Will check later.

I checked the plumbing and components and figured out why I did what I did. The St. Paul hoist needs pressure relief valve protection at 1500 lbs. My AC and JD tractors are about double that. I split off the pump, covered the cylinder opening with half inch steel plate, ground smooth, and made a gasket for it. Cut hose threads in the plate- that hose pressurizes the cylinder bolted to it, and has the pressure relief valve in it. The pressure relief valve has an exhaust port to let oil go back to the tractor. That was the interconnecting hose, plumbed into the hyd return line. That return line starts at the cylinder (existing) and has the check valve in it. The check valve keeps high pressure oil from energizing the back side of the cylinder if the two-way valve is moved the wrong way. The check valve must be between the cylinder and the T where the connecting hose screws in- otherwise it will not protect the cylinder from high pressure oil from the pressure relief valve.
