Lots of times I would be mowing hay for a commercial hay man or working cattle for a ranch and the hunger pains would hit, sometimes I would go the whole day just to try to keep from eating one but, ya�ll know how a youngun is, the hunger pain just override the basic desire to eat and you have to choke it down to keep from getting so hungry you get nervous from not eating, well I hope that I�m not the only one too notice this but I was in the grocery store sometime back and I seen a fella (late 20�s or early 30�s) getting groceries and his wife asked him if they should get a couple of t-bones for lunch, curious I asked the man where he worked at and he said he was disabled,on food stamps,so was his wife(disabled)I asked him how it happened and he didn�t remember, I thought to myself if I was disabled I think I would remember how I got that way, then I thought to myself again maybe it is none of my business, then I noticed when I left the store the guy carrying a big sack of dog food on one shoulder and toting a 30 pack of beer under the other arm leading around a 5 or 6 year old boy with the same hand that he had the beer under putting it in a very new truck 4x4 that is, seems to me this just wasn�t right then I thought well this is America and people will do what they can to get by, then I thought to myself how many times have me and the wife been to the store and had to buy bologna because we didn�t have the money to buy the good stuff like steak,because we had bills to pay,I�ve worked everyday since I was 16 for a pay check and 3 rugrat�s to raise but, I have not ever asked for anything from the govt. I�m sure some people need help but I still believe some are just phonies, when I left I thought again to myself wish I had that truck he was driving probably couldn�t afford the insurance though.

SO THE QUESTION IS

How many others are out there that have to eat a bologna sandwich for lunch and-or have seen this or have had it happen to them because the better half has to work just curious.

Now, I know - your not putting everyone into the same basket, but I figured I had to reply to this one. I'm 44 in January, spent 8 years in the USMC and recieve a disability from the VA. I ran a very successful window operation for several years (among other things) after I was discharged. Due to injuries and exposures while in the service, things began to take a toll (bad knees, bad back, blood vessel desease, diabetes, vericous veins, deaf in one ear, arthritus, bursitus, carpial tunnel, bad ankles, asthma, sinusitus, separated both shoulders, and a few more - I tell people I answer to the name of "Lucky"), I've been on disability for the past 3 years. I'm using a cane right now to get around. I can (and do) sometimes leave the cane in the truck for short jaunts into the bank, store, or gas station, but don't go very far. If you'd happen to see me durring one of those trips, you'd wonder why I'm on disability, but follow me to Wal-mart or any other store where the walk is over 1-200 feet, especially after a car ride of 15-20 miles - things are TOTALLY different. Even out on the farm, with no concrete in sight, I forgo the cane, but only because it gets in the way of some things. I just take more rest breaks and take longer (WAY longer) to do things. You see me out durring one of these times and you'd wonder. What you don't see is the soft braces I wear, or the night cramps and joint pain, or the 2-3 days recovery I need after a day in the pasture working on fence, or other jobs. I drive a 1997 F-150 (paid for and 340,000 miles on it) and my wife has a dreaded SUV - 1999 Ford Expedition (Eddie Bauer **SCANDAL**), which is paid for and has 110,000 miles. Both were paid for with money from working, not disability. Not railing on ya, but just letting you know - sometimes things are different than they appear. On top of all that, I'm getting BALD! WISH I could collect disability for THAT!! 8^)

All I can say they have no morals and no dignity. Leave teh assitants for the elderly and the truely disabled. I got kicked by a cow on june 30. To most of the quick aid seekers that would have nursed a disability check for atleast 6 mos, here in wisconsin. I was down for 1/2 a milking and was back up and going the next day. I still have a huge lump on my leg and sharp pains from time to time. But, I have cows to milk and crops to get in. I do have insurance they helped cover the rape from the doc office when they over charge for their advice on the matter as to how long it will take to heal. I was black for almost 3 weeks from my upper leg to my ankle. Yeap the cow is still breathing air on my farm.

a disabled person is one that cannot get out of bed much less the house. here in nc it's much abused. if a person can get in their vehicle and drive to work or wal-mart or anywhere else they want to go ,then my opinion they are not disabled.

He always wanted to be a long-haul trucker, but couldn't pass the DOT physical. He was a radio announcer [DJ] from the 1970's until around 2000, until the stations around here started going to music on computer hard drives...can't use audio-controlled equipment while he's on the air, y'know...so his job's another casualty of modern technology.

It's a real shame, 'cause he's got a good voice and was always really smooth on the air. So now he's in "retirement," because being in his 50's as well as being blind, nobody wants to take a chance on him...or risk the liability, in case his blindness might cause a problem for someone else.

Plenty of folks that are really disabled, & cannot get any help, but many that draw a check, & do casual labor everyday... One guy here has a bad back, but is able to drive all over the Southeast , shuttling cars from dealer to dealer. He told me he cannot work... I guess driving is not work... Here it is bad backs for the men, & nerves for the women. One Couple here had the back/nerve thing.. He had a sucessful car lot in the front yard, she bred & sold registered dogs.. worst part of it all was how arrogant they were, on our money... I have no problem with folks that are really disabled, or down on luck, but there sure seem to be a lot that are abusing the system...

and my thoughts are if you are disabled why the hell are you getting in everybodys way. disabled people should not be allowed to drive. just sit home and collect your check and wax your vehicle.

HBR, a lot of stuff you say makes you a real a-hole. For a flip of a coin you could be any one of these people. You sort of spout off like the gov does stuff. The gov hurts the 90% decent people by cutting the benefits because there are dead beats in the welfare system instead of going after the 5-10% crooks.

and also if you haven't noticed the handicap people with their little handicap thing swinging on the rear view mirror. like they drive expensive vehicles . the picture on their handicap thing shows a person in a wheelchair. what crap. there goes some more of my tax money to the low life.

I'm like you, seeing this kind of thing makes me sick. I worked bagging groceries back in the 80's and all the time saw people coming in buying stuff with food stamps. Then they'd pull around in a brand new Caddy to pick them up and then didn't bother to tip us for loading them...they got remembered next time when the bread went to the bottom of the bag, right under the cans.... As far as the disabled part of it, my Mom is 56, in very bad health, and has been told more or less she's living on borrowed time due to the severity of her lung problems. Up until last year she worked nearly all her life, at least part time, til her medical problems forced her to stop. Even then she never once considered taking anything from the government. Now though things have gotten worse, she's tied to an oxygen bottle almost constantly due to a problem with her lungs, along with everything else, and absolutely can't work. With all her problems she's more than qualified for disability coverage to help offset some of the medical stuff the insurance doesn't cover. Problem is she's applied and waited and waited and waited and waited and so far they haven't done anything to help. It's a shame when someone who works all their life and then has problems like this can't get the benifits they need and deserve because of all the other sorry a--holes out there taking what they don't need....Just my .02

I was a managaer at a major appliance manufacturer and always had to deal with people on restrictions and supposed work comp issues, as well as disabilty. Being the bum I am I always loved, 1. running into the girl who has tendonitis AND carpel tunnel sooo bad her therapist said she could only sit and basically do some thing (that was not even a job and rest 45 min out of 60), I run into her snowmobiling. She was ahead of me for like 40 moiles, she dvove like a banshee on a 700CC racer. Nipped that in the butt. Another critical machine oper was taking off work due to (spraining) his back at work. Was off for about 8 months on work comp, I finnally run into him at the farm store. Carrying 3 tractor batt and a case of oil. smiling all the way to the counter till he saw my face. Another gal that had restrictions at work that she HAD to alternate sitting/standing every 15 minutes, she was soo bad we could not find a job to fit her, untill a buddy of mine happened to be in a biker convoy out to sturgis, she only got off at gas time. Unless you are in the business you have no idea how much fruad like this id cripline US businesses. As well as the well fare system and disabilty. I have a 93 year old neihbor that has bad knees, back, hips, you name it. He takes no assistance and lives within his means. I

I don't think they have issued food stamps around here in quite awhile. They give the recipenents a credit card thing, supposed to cut down on fraud. I am 50 and I have a couple friends of mine who are on disability. Both of them appear to be pretty well disabled to me. But I am no doctor. I have heard that some guys go on disability when they become unemployed after 40 or so. I have had a couple of friends who have lost jobs in the last couple of years, and the only thing they could get was retail, 8 - 10 $/hour part time stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them goes on disability, it might pay better. And after all, its about money. Easy.

hey mr. curious, don't feel bad about all the scum. at my workplace i have a walk 5 minute to get to my building leaving my economy vehicle in a deck. at the building next to us is a handicap space which is occupied everyday by this fat female dog driving a $35,000 pickup that can walk better than me. talk about crap. i'm with you buddy.

There may be nothing wrong with her and the handicap sticker might be legal. Just for somebody else. Around here the judge executive's secretary parks in the handicap spot. The drivers who drive the handicap medical van will park in the handicap spot without passengers. The Amish taxi's park in the handicap with the driver sitting in the vehicle. One Amish taxi was using her husbands sticker.

JUST MY 2 CENTS WORTH,

I read all the issues that were posted and I guess I'm not sure what category I would fall under?
I'm on disability - "Permanent Disability" and this wasn't the way I wanted it! I had open heart surgery back in 2002 with four by passes and a valve repaired. I even was still working on the job for better than a week when had this heart attack. Didn't have the symtoms like some people have. I new something was wrong with me but what??
I've work since I was 14 and still in school.
I've worked in a foundry for ten years till they talked about closing the doors so I took on another full time job of driving truck for 10 yrs. at machinery dealer. My last job was back to a factory again it was a machine shop work machining Heavy duty brake rotors and hubs. Got 20 yrs in that place till I had this health problem. All the years that I worked I only was laid off for two weeks. And was off on a back injury years ago I worked everyday. I was told by my doctor that I had only 20% of my heart left, I didn't argue with him cause I knew I felt like a ton of bricks had fallen on me. I just couldn't do the things I use to do.I went to rehab after my release from the hospital but I couldn't do it. I still was week as a kitten. They told me to wait a few more weeks an try it again. I did go back and started my rehab but had other complications shortly after that. I had one bye passes collaps on me and had to have a stent put in. From there I had to go back and have a Defibrillator-(ICD)implant. Boy I thought what next? I was told the replacement Battery for one cost $30.000 I'm not sure if that true or not but wouldn't suprize me.
I'm now on Social Security Disability and I had to go to one of there doctors before I was to be approved. This doctor said to me You've been dancing with the devil haven't you. Well I really didn't need to hear that. I would like to think the good lord gave me a secound chance.
I had a lot of doctors checked me out with a fine tooth comb before I was put on S.S.D. NO FOOD STAMPS!!
My wife still works and its a good thing she does it helps on the insurance part anyways. I have 13 different medications I have take and they don't come cheap!!! I geuss I can say I was fortunate than most I had a good insurance from where I worked and that help out for a few months on bills Ect.
I also done farming with my dad and loved it!! I didn't get rich doing it-it was just something about it that was relaxing. I sold most of the machinery but have a few tractors left thinking on selling them but one.
They don't get much use like they should. Once in a while start them up and drive them to the corner and back to keep them lubricated up. The need a good work out to get the carbon blowed out of them.
I like to apoligize for talking to much on this. Hope Kim doesn't mind to much for doing this because it's not tractor related. So I'm not sure what catagory I fall under here??
Just my two cents worth. Just one person that had to retire before his time. Mike

Mike, You and others that are not able to work is what the system is set up for. Enjoy what you can of your situation and rest assured that no one here will judge you in your plight. The ones that scam the system are the deadbeats. I have 5 neighbors on disability and only one of them shows a physical sign of it. The others are definitely unable to work from years of hard work tearing up their bodies. I was lucky to be able to retire before it happened to me.

I think all of us here would agree there's a huge difference between someone who's worked hard all their life (and basically worn themselves out) and someone who's completely capable to work, but is just too darned lazy. I would go to the ends of the earth to help someone that deserves help... but have no respect for the low lifes who abuse the system. God Bless, my friend!

I have no problem helping out the sick, infirm, disabled, elderly, etc. But I've seen some real acts put on, some real cheats, you know the story. If these people would stop their games the money would go to the proper people.

I am 57 and was 54 when I had a stroke at work and drove a cement mixer truck. Now they won't let me drive over the road anymore, something about passing out and running down into the bar ditch or something, go figger. Never hit nobody, and it only happened once, but anyway they put me on permanent disability the first time around, and now I can't own anything. I don't even own the britches I'm sitting in typing this. The little woman does. And we can't get married because that would be joint property and they'ed take away the money it takes, about $1148 dollars a month, to keep me percolating. Lots more questions here than answers, but I saw your name here and just had to nail you. Drove over the road for about 15 years, and had a lot of love for you boys. Again, Hehehehe. not too long ago in the grocery store. kid was talking on a cell phone mas phone was ringing in her purse paid with food stamps. i just needed few things checked out quick they were out getting in a ford explorer brand new was the new style for the year. mind you the cell phones were pry 80 bucks a month that could be gotton rid of. mom had nice jewlery on as well. i know it was her mom and not an aunt or something was because she was talking about how she never deramed her daughter woudl be such a brat. know somone who declares bankrupcy every 7 years. claims he only pays .30 cents on the dollar of bills he owes. he gets private investments and/or money from his dad walks in with cash buys all sorts of stuff equipment trucks house bankrupts out pays 30 cents on the dollar for waht he owes. buys brand new trucks for 9000 dollars. problem is lawyers (not all ) but they know the laws and become pros and all they do all way is help poeple jump through loop holes until they become professional rip offs.

I turned on Fox news, and Tony Snow was on. One of the hot Fox girls was in NO or Houston, didn't catch which. She was interviewing some well dressed black guy, he said that he only had one hour sleep last nite, because he was trying to prod FEMA into action or something, he was wanting the Goverment to get it in gear, and pass out the cash. He looked at the camera and said, that there ain't enough law, or Military force to stop the blacks if they don't pass out the cash. Tony Snow cut him off, Tony said the guy was getting off topic.

I get one of those checks and I look healthy as a horse but due to total renal failure and I spend 15 hours a week hooked to a dailysis machine don't feel like doing much rest of day . And my past employer fired me while in hospital to get me off his insurance after all dialysis only costs about 2000.00 each time I go so don't judge a book by it's cover and I still work part time also and also drive a newer truck so what I paid for it.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. I survived an accident and they were setting up disability for me. I'm glad I was able to return to work for several years before retirement. I went in to work and told them to ignor people if they see me out on a tractor while I was off as this was my best therapy. They just shook their heads and chuckled. It sure would be a better world if more people minded their own buisness. I for one don't want to walk in your shoes.

I did not have a choice I was forced on disabilty ,but the nice thing is that I can earn up to what I draw monthly so that makes things easier . But the dumb ones that open there mouth don't have a clue , hey any of you boy's want to trade places me since you think being on disabilty is so easy ??

You are missing the point. The point is the fraud which occurs in claiming disability. The system was created to help those truly disabled, but far too many people play the system thus costing the tax payers millions each year.

There is a guy here that has been disabled as long as i've known him, in his early 40's, he is married, has kids, rides horses, works cattle, had a lawn mowin business but it was to hard on him. He came out in early spring and loaded up scrap iron that I gave him, he didn't have any help, and he loaded about 3000 lbs by hand. There is nothing wrong with this guy, but he gets the check just the same.

When I lived in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, you would see things like that all the time. New cars, no utility bills, free housing, lots of bambinos, free medical care. Cars with Texas plates, cars with Frontera Tamulipas plates, hey no problem, same way come election day, 98 per cent of the vote went to the communist party candidate. Corruption abounded in the local and county government. And people wonder why I not so fondly refer to far south Texas as Mexico.

If I ever did play the lottery, and I ever did win like a gazillion dollars, I'd probably still eat macaroni and cheese and bologna sandwiches because the thought of eating snails saute'ed in french butter or fish eggs pickled in russian vodka don't do a thing for me. That wouldn't be kosher at the high dollar country clubs I could then afford, so wouldn't be invited back for sure. Some folks know how to play yours and my tax dollars.

I read the other day that if you see a white guy over 40 who isn't working, chances are he's on some sort of disability. Now I don't see anything wrong with paying SSI to somepne who truly can't work, but I know of at least two guys who are collecting disability and could easily hold down a job if they wanted to.

One guy does have some mental problems, but I hired him to do some painting and he was about the best painter I ever saw. He gets a letter in the mail saying something like "congratulations, you're now eligible for SSI because the government lost a class-action lawsuit." So he's 50 years old, living with his mom and dad, collecting SSI. And he doesn't have to paint anymore.

Yep, I've seen similar things more times than I want to remember. My farming parents lamented years ago about a relative of ours that declared bankrupcy and was soon living "higher" than they. Reminds me too, my wife had a business and I worked for her part time for 10 years, without the first penney of pay. But the government always had its hand out for taxes and they were paid. I think the little honest guy is just a stepping stone for others on their way up.

Aloha, As I began reading your post, the first thing that came to my mind about him not remembering how he got disabled was because he was disabled between the ears. Sure doesn't look like he is disabled between the ears if he can get food stamps, new 4X4,etc. A lot of times I see people that looks very well to do using food stamps (buying all the goodies) and getting into a mercedes. Looks like I am the one who is disabled between the ears. LOL
