Ford 908 Rotary Cutter: Gearbox Lube

I finally got a manual for my Ford 908 cutter. Under the section for the gearbox lube reads as follows:

"The gearbox on the 60-inch, Series 908 Cutter, is factory-lubricated with a high grade industrial-type grease that is normally good for the life of the cutter. Generally, it is not necessary to add grease to the gearbox. However, if seal damage is encountered or the gearbox was disassembled for overhaul, then the gearbox should be replenished with the specified amount of clean multi-purpose lithium base grease, Part No. 5PM-1C57-A. Factory-fill capacity of the gearbox is 18 ounces.
IMPORTANT: Clean 5PM-1 C57-A or ESEN-MIC-137A multi-purpose lithium base grease should be used in the gearbox. Never use oil or the wrong type of grease, or fill the gearbox more than specified. See your Ford Tractor-Equipment Dealer for the specified type of grease."

Ok, so I tell me dealer about his, he says he "never heard of such a thing, run 80-90 gear lube".

I do not want to ruin the gearbox.

Before I got the manual, I ran some solvent thought the gearbox for a while and drained it. Guess what came out? Well it was the same color of lithium grease, a whitish yellow. I have not yet refilled it with anything.

So now I need to replace the grease. Does anyone have any idea of how to get the grease into the gearbox and insure the it gets into the bearings properly? Has anyone out there ever mechanic-ed on one of these?

Also, does anyone have any idea of the part numbers for the grease specified in the manual, that is what might be equal?

Miles I got the manual from my local dealer. It was about $12. I've seen them on the internet also, but for more $$.

I agree, the guys that made the thing probably know best.

When I checked the lube originally, I assumed it would be gear oil. I removed the oil level plug and looked inside and could not see anything. I stuck my finger in and could feel something like grease down in the bottom. I thought I would run some diesel through to it to clean everything out. The stuff that came out of the drain hole with the diesel looked like it probably was grease. I didn't have enough gear lube so I thought I would get some the next day. I so happened my manual came in that day too. While at the farm store, I read in the manual about the grease and asked and was told to run gear lube. He also said I could run 00 grease if that would make me feel better. Never heard of 00 grease, but I looked at some and it does flow like a real heavy oil, and I have found that it is available as a lithium base. This is probably what I want to use.

I would think you would be ok with 80-90 but we use 85-140 in big shredder boxes. Some are running a grease in shredders and sprinkler gear boxes. It's kind of like corn head or cotton picker grease and can be pumped. Many use it for other gear boxes and it doesn't leak out as much. A local lubricants supplier should know about it.

I wouldn't go against the factory lube recommendations, but I have never heard of using lithium grease in a gearbox. All the new ones recommend 80W90 GL5 gear lube. Was the consistancy of the stuff you got out of the gearbox like gun grease? Are there any drainholes for the grease on the side of the gearbox? If there aren't then it probably used a heavy grease rather than gear oil. I'd work on the dealer a little bit harder 'cuz it sounds like he's brushing you off. Good Luck.

Ford recommended grease for the gearbox. Plain and simple; in black and white. Your dealer thinks he knows more than those who had to stand behind the cutter when it was new. You probably won't go wrong either way, but the gearlube may not stay in there as well as grease. I know which I would use.

I have a 908 as well and recently changed the oil and used 80/90w. The oil that came out was black so probably never changed before... I expect that if your oil was still yellow, there was probably no reason to change.

Where did you purchase your manual?

Also does anyone know what model number was used for the 6 or 7ft if available. I would like to purchase a larger unit.
