Howdy,
I know that cats can be useful on the farm. I live in the city. I will never own a cat, I don"t like them at all. I have a small dog. The problem is this: My 2 of my neighbors have cats and let the damn things have the run of the neighborhood. I can"t get close enough to them to see if they even have tags on to see where they live, they are too fast. They use my landscaping as their litter box and then they walk all over my cars. I have an animal trap, but I don"t know what to do with them if I trap them. I don"t want to kill them, which might happen if I take them to the pound. It truely irritates me that if my dog gets out, it gets caught and then I pay a fine to get it back. Yet this is not the case with cats.

In all of your farming wisdom, is there anything I can put in my yard, other than a bigger dog, to keep the cats away. I"d settle for that. Someone once suggested mothballs, but it didn"t work for them. I"d be thankful for any help you can give.

Hi Chris. You have gotten some very good advice on how to detere/kill cats on the forum here but, you asked for some "farming wisdom". Out here were I live if we have a problem with a pest like that I speak directly to the HUMAN being in charge of that animal. If that does not resolve the problem then the innosent animal that was unlucky unuf to live with the HUMAN gets it in the head. Dont seem right does it? A dumb animal has to pay for the stupidity of its master. Thats the way it is here though.

You may eat more than you realize. Especially if you go for seconds at the Chineese restaurant buffet.

What you do is: go get yourself 3-4 1" pipe nipples and caps. Drill two 1/8" holes in the end of half the caps. Fill the nipples with Catnip and put one regular cap and one drilled cap on each nipple. Throw the completed assemblies under your neighbor's porch - shed - house, or wherever you can on his property. The cats will have weeks of enjoyment out of your yard.

Chris, maybe if you caught one in a Havaheart trap and took it back to the owner in the trap? Would that sit well with them? On the other hand like someone said, theres probably fewer mice, moles etc. with the cats loose. A cat is really neat about snagging a mole, where as a dog will nuke the whole lawn trying. I bought a big pile of cement blocks from an elderly lady that had about 15 cats, not one mouse nest in those blocks.

I have a small dog too,a blue heeler very hyper.I am using that underground electric fence, only thing that will keep her put.Anyhow she LOVES cats she must be part chineese as she eats them.No cats around in our "fenced" area. Now if I could just get the neighbors to put in an invisible fence for their dogs to keep them out of our yard. They even went up the road and killed some sheep and goats. If I catch them again in my yard it'll be time for S.S.S.

Too be honest, I grew up with , if they roam, they are a problem. Did not matter if it was our dog or the neighbors cats. They got shot. Cats that rome do nothing but kill wildlife, breed, make a mess. Always notify the owner first time so they are at least aware of the problem and see if they resolve it, if not .22 caliber shell are cheap. Ya can shoot about 50 cats, rodents, etc., for about $.88

There is nothing wrong with taking them to the pound. If your neighbor really cared about his animals he'd make sure they stayed on his property. Eventually they'll get hit by a car or someone else will poison them so actually you're doing the animal a favor. About the second or third time he has to "bail them out" he'll start keeping them closer to home.

The cats I like are big and yellow and noisy, that type of Cat is always welcome on my property, LOL. My neighbor has a black cat that always prowls my property, and catches critters and brings them over to my neighbor's doorstep. Since he is keeping the critter population down on my place, he is welcome.

First off, let me be foreward and admit, I'm a cat lover. So my views may be a bit askew.

We have a bunch of cats on the farm. I remember one hard winter, there were so many mice comming into the barns, and the cats were killing so many of them that they weren't even hungry enough to eat them all. There were actually dead mice laying around, and a bunch of well fed content cats laying around the barn in the dead of winter.

We also keep house cats. We have one that can catch bats. We have had 3 or 4 bats in the house and he has caught every one. Generally the females are the best hunters, but this guy is something to see in action.

And if you're concerned about your landscape, think of how many rabbits you'd have if it weren't for the cats.

So if you really want to deter them, there is a relatively new plant out marketed as "Scardy Cat", it is in the Plectranthus (Sweedish Ivy) family, and it is said to deter many animals, including cats. Depending on where you are located, you may have to wait until spring to find it, but it is said to work. It has a bit of an odor, and will continue to deter them after other sprays and such have worn off or washed away. You might want to give that a try.

Chuck

Lighten up! A few cat turds never hurt anyone. At least they cover up their mess. I'll bet those cats are keeping your mouse population down.

If the paw prints bug you that much, throw a cover over your car.

Red pepper (tea) seems to keep unwanted animals under control and makes for a good organic pesticide. Mix hot peppers in a large container with water and place in the sun for a couple of weeks. Then spray the areas around your landscaping. After a few visits they"ll find somewhere else to go.

Get a small trap from your local feed store and set it on your property and out of site like behind a trash can and when you catch them just load them up and haul them to another town and drop them off. Cats are pretty good at finding new homes so if you take them somewhere where there is houses they should be alright. You should be able to get a small trap around 30.00

I once had a neighbor that swore up and down that my cat was getting in his garage and tearing open the garbage bags and spreading the trash. He threatened to shot the cat on sight. I said "you better not" So he set some Victor steel traps in his garage and caught the culprit. That "kitty" sprayed everything in sight! That was the last I ever heard from him about cats. LOL

I would suggest you go to your neighbors, let them know what is going on with their cats. I would not use the antifreeze method. This is very cruel to the animal, and I see you show some compassion to the cats by not taking them to the pound. If you could see a cat curled up on a rug in front of a wood stove on a freezing night maybe you would change your mind about cats.I wish I had a better answer. Stan

We once had a real nasty neighbor who got real angry at cats. Apparently if your pet is on another person's land, it is trespassing. You might try to do sumtin like that. You could also put up a big piece of lattice on top of your fence or sumtin that they cant really climb on.

I have seen an ad recently for a sprinkler with a motion detector on it, when something gets within range it turns on the sprinkler. should work real good with cats since they dont like getting wet. think I saw it in a Northern tool catalog or else in a Cabelas catalog

I can tell you from experience that even a bigger dog doesn't work. I live through the woods from my Dad and have two dogs, both around 50 lbs. At Dads we have about 10 or so "shop cats" that keep the mice, snakes, lizards, etc all under control. The cats will run on occasion, but their just as inclined to turn around on the dogs and chase them. The other day my male Roscoe went in the door of the shop and cornered one of the long time resident cats. She politely bowed up at him, hissed, and then jumped on his head and went right on over his back, leaving him standing there looking at an empty corner with a "what the he-- just happened" look on his face. I do know that the pepper trick always workes with my dogs when they get it in their head to chew on something. A little bit of pepper on their favorite chew spot and they don't go back. Maybe it'll work with the cats getting it on their feet.

Some people say to put mothballs in your mulch, but since they are already using it as a toilet, not sure it would work.----Others say to liberally sprinkle the area with red PEPPER.Might want to mix it in a little Crisco or? to make it stick to their feet better. They lick their feet and it is like WOW, thats HOT!I ain't goin there again!---- A shot of permanent antifreeze in a piece of fish or meat.It won't "hurt" them.LOL,That will end your cat problem.I hate those arrogant sobs. They think they own you.

Bubba 2, Cats don`t think they own you. They just believe that have very well trained servants. I have shot cats in the rump with a pellet gun pumped up a couple of times to sting but not hurt cats and they do leave our bird feeders alone now. (they were my wifes cats, shhhh)
