I found tappets at least .007" intake, .010" exhaust. Warm engine, at idle, check and reset. I hope this helps.

Its been a long time since I have seen one of those. I can not help with the valve lash but if it backfires in the carb your timing is out way bad. Possible that the timing is set to fire on the intake stroke instead of TDC ? Most of the time I set it at TDC then fine tune it, if it still backfires, then it is likely 180 degrees out with the cam and crank. To set a valve on a rebuild remove the plugs and rotate the crank with a wrench until the valve sets flat (meaning seated inside the head). Then tighten down the rocker arm just snug because once it is running it will have to be readjusted. You may have to do each one seperatly to get it right before starting it. Maybe I'm wrong but I think the timing is the problem.

You I do not know what Hercules motor it is I can not find any plates or numbers on this motor only reason I know it is Hercules is because of big letters on manifold.
