I"m just curious, how many of you guys/gals still hunt? Not the big/ popular stuff like deer, turkeys, pheasants, but squirrels, rabbits, etc. Used to hunt them alot when I was younger, still get out 4-5 times a year at least.

What do you all use to get them? Used to use .22 all the time, but use my 12ga pump now as I"m usually hunting pheasant at the same time. I know 12 ga. is over kill, but it"s what I got.

Hunt deer with .240 Weatherby, and .50 cal muzzleloader(s). (Sometimes others, .243win, 7.62x39) Turkey with a .410 shotgun. Varmints with whatever comes to hand first, including 9mm.

Been hunting, chasing & scouting deer, bear, elk, upland game and waterfowl missing only 4 seasons (USN) since about 10. I am a meat hunter and strive for one shot one kill with full penetration. My favorite hunting method is traditional black powder, archery then modern firearms.

Have 2 teen-angel sons (Gabriel & Lucifer) that hunt with me. Wife has the equipment but prefers to stay home most of the time while me and the boys go out.

Primary game for my angels is squirrel, rabbits and dove with some limited deer hunting. Now that I live in the South hawgs are on the menu replacing bear (outlawed). Got skunked on a TX bowhunt last yr. Just rtn'd from NH and thinking of going up there next yr. for moose hunt (freezer is becoming empty).

I am also certified Hunter Ed Instructor (Archery, rifle etc), NRA instructor, and National Archery training for local schools. Teach about 10 Hunter Ed classes over the course of a yr. Been doing Hunter Ed and Scouts for about 7 yrs.

Got more guns than tractors and not enough time to fully enjoy either of them.

Excellent question!! PS - in my Hunter Ed classes seeing a significant increase in girls & women which is a positive for sustained growth. For you older gents just introduce a kid to the outdoors (hunting & fishing) & they are generally hooked for life!

Hey guys,Still like to go out and drop a few squirrels.But being a little older and alittle wiser we"re a bit more selective on what we take home.Mostly look for the odd black or albino ones.It"s not like being 12 years old and cleaning the woodlot out.Mostly use a rem. .22 single shot w/scope-eyes arn"t that good any more.Other than that it"s mostly deer in WI and MN with 12 ga.Rem.870 open sights.Can"t wait for the boy to get old enough to hunt, than I think you won"t find us anywhere but the woods come hunting season.Happy shootin",DitchWI

Not as much as I used to. Too busy doing important stuff, have to change my ways. Some of my bets memories are hunting with my Father and with my son. I'm supposed to be moose hunting right now butthe hunt has been postponed. While we were waiting to begin the trip north due to the last member being hasstled at customs. One of the other guys tripped on the stairs, hit his head and nearly died. It had to have been by the hand of the Almighty. The doctors and everyone figured we were going to a funeral. On the 4th day our buddy came around and asked when were going hunting.

Sorry to hear the hunt was delayed but danged glad to hear your buddy is lucid enough to still want to go hunting. Hope your bunch gets to make it out in the field and the customs folks ease up on your other buddy. Those boulders in the path can ruin a lot of fun.

The Federal gov't here is working hard with our tax dollars to ban private ownership of firearms world wide. Young hunters, poor, lower middle class and middle class can hardly afford to hunt or shoot here. The cost of training manuals/regulations, permits, testing, police checks, registration, gun vaults, etc. $$$ and hassle pushed a majority of firearm owners out. Andturn their guns into the cops to be chopped up. The little old ladies/widows have been so frightened and brainwashed by the media. They call the cops to come and pickup their husbands guns before his body is cold. They seem to have no idea the value of the pre 1964 Winchesters, Weatherbys etc. They don't even read or believe the ads in the papers where legit collectors can pickup the guns and pay them a few bucks. A few years ago some STUPID old women in New Found Land. Called the cops and turned in a family heirloom. Turns out it was an Officers pistol and holster from the Titanic.

Shhhhh, You might give them some ideas on this side of the border. Seriously the schools here are trying hard to brain wash the kids and the media has been trying here for years too. There is hope but the other side keeps getting stronger. The value of the Titanic firearm and holster had to have been way out of my reach. Wow, wonder what they did with it?

The Titanic pistol and holster was turned into the RCMP. At that time there is no recourse, the firearm was torched or cut in half then melted down at a steel mill. Destruction of rare and valuable firearms happened everyday due to scared and stupid people. These firearms even go to be scrapped wearing $600+ scopes. The scared owners don't even know the scopes could be removed and sold.

I live in Adel, bales 5 arces of hay just south of De Soto, and work in Waukee. Looking around for some possible land to rent in the next year or so, 5 acres isn"t enough land to work, or hunt. Went out tonight, couldn"t get any squirrels yet, but there is time still.

Hunting is my thing. Use everything from .22 to .06. Try to find the occasional gopher above ground, and pests with the .22 to the elk, moose, cougar, black bear, and white tail deer with the 30-06. Do some birding for dove, quail,duck, goose and grouse. LOL

Been hunting waterfowl,deer, pheasants with out missing a season since about 12. Now that the boys are 5 and 9 squirrel and rabbits are back on the list. Turkey have yet to be drawn. As I am a stay at home farmer now, I hope to get into coyotes this winter. Have grampas winchester mo 67 .22 and his win model 12 shotgun. Also use a marlin model 60 , benelli SBE, winchester super X2, and a few others that really dont get used. Ya cant have too many guns or tractors. Have a deer in the swetcorn right now and 16 mallards on the pond next to the house. Coyotes been chasing the turkeys out of the area last few weeks. Darn things.

I hunt Pheasant , Deer , some grouse , rabbits , squirrel. Mostly deer and pheasant though. IF i gave up bird hunting my 3 springers would disown me ! lol Deer hunt up by Waukon , have cabin up there . Pheasant hunt around What Cheer , New Sharon area . Should be a ton of birds this year .

I"ve been thru the What Cheer area, looks like a good place for bird hunting. Just got back from my friend"s place, while hunting squirrels, heard a couple roosters on the other side of the creek. Hopefully it"ll be a good year.

the only big game hunting i do is bow for deer. i do a little waterfowl. i hunt alot of rabbit, coon and coyote. i have four hounds for the coon and coyotes. we finally got a mountain lion season this year so i know i'll be running after them now too. the hounds are just as important to me as the farming if not a tad more. i also have to hunt pheasents being i live in the capitol!

Rabbits, used Hawthorn 22 from Montgomery Wards at first but now use a Remington Mohawk 48 semi-auto 12 gauge.

Hunting laws seem more restrictive every year. Overzealous conservation officers, hound eating coyotes, and confusing game hunting laws take the fun out of hunting.

I gave it up a few years ago. Plenty of game, doves, deer, varmits, rabbits, etc just lost the desire. A 6 year old, his soccer, my photography, and the farm work just dont leave me much time or energy. Plus it lost a lot of its challenge. Im too lazy to bow hunt and with a gun, if I see it I can kill it so I just gave it up. Still like to shoot; taking an advanced concealed carry confidence course this weeking. As far as weapons of choice .223 Colt HBAR for varmits, Ithica 20 ga for small game, .270 Remmington for deer, .45 Sig for concealed carry

Turkey,Deer and squirrel are about the only thing left to hunt in southwest ohio! at least in my area!
Coydogs have pretty much cleaned out the rabbits!
About the only place you see rabbits around here are in town!
There hasn't been any Bird hunting around here in years, Sure once a year they release Pheasents at Rush Run State Preserve!
BUT if you ever been there for that! You feel lucky to have come out of there ALIVE!
Nothing like 200 hunters in 50 acres of preserve!
I used to love rabbit hunting! Walked all over 200 acers last year for several hours seen 3 rabbits total! Nothing like taking your gun out for a walk!
About the only hunting I do anymore is Turkey in the spring, find it a lot of fun!
Been thinking of starting Coydog hunting! There are lots and lots of them around! If you haven't heard of Coydogs they are a cross between domestic dogs and coyotes! Meaner than Coyotes too! They dont have the natural fear of man! Have had them on my front deck! Got to watch letting our small dogs out at night also because of them!

Hey Rich,
I too, used to hunt small game many years ago, but haven't hunted them recently... gonna git'r done this season though... we've been ABSOLUTELY over-run with them the past two or three years. Went to feed the hay burners tonight and saw at least a dozen hangin around the barn. Have fun!!

I still go out coupla times a year here in New York.Dont seem to be as many rabbits as there used to be.I use a 16ga auto.Years ago used to go upstate with guys had a pack a beagles and man they took that rabbit huntin real serious.You step off the line or somethin like that and they let ya know about it real quick like.I only went coupla times and said heck with that.They acted like it was some kinda military operation.Sometimes they would kill 40-50 rabbits.I thought they were nuts.All I wanna do is walk a few hedgerows and kick a few bushes.Dont hunt the squirrles anymore,did alot when I was a kid tho,used a 22cal for that.

I love squirrel hunting here in Northern Wisconsin. I used to use a .22, then got a .17 rimfire, now I started using a .32 Muzzelloader. All that smoke sure rocks!!!
