I just heard that John Deere filed for bank ruptcy. Anbody know if this is fact or fiction?

Take a gander up and down the street sometime on a weekend. How many green little machines do you see? Even if Ag broke even, the yuppie market keeps them pumpin'. I own Deere and it looks just fine to me.

I live 15 miles north of Waterloo Ia. You cant throw a dead cat around here without hitting a JD worker or top exe. Someone is blowing smoke up your u know what. Some of the lines at the plant have slowed down abit and guys getting layed off for a day to 3 days but that is normal. Been happening for years that way.

Likely not any company with that kind of strong balance sheet would be anywhere near banckruptcy. Only those of us that love the old stuff that they ignored for years, and now they want to charge several prices for various excuses are going to file bankruptcy.
If it is a "slow mover", they charge a bunch because it "cost a lot to keep that part in inventory". However, for all of the fast moving parts, there is a different set of excuses for the exorbitant prices.

Fiction. They grossed 6.4 BILLION last year and put 1.57 Billion back into coffers. They had 3.49B in cash on the balance sheet.

The Deere haters want to hear a story like that and run with it so much. They rarely verify the source. A drop in stock prices like that. Just means the executives sold thier shares six months ago and they are purchasing now. Buy low, sell high.

Actually John Deere insiders only own .04% of the outstanding stock. There is very little effect they could have on the stock price as to when they were buying and selling. There were some sales by insiders back in July but not very much.

The key for the drop in their price appears to be that they are not meeting sales targets based on low demand due to weather related issues per the company.

But the bankruptcy talk appears to be way off.

Deere insiders buying selling stock make no difference on the price..... .....however. The executives can tweek a profit forcast and send the stock prices crashing. The executive insiders purchase a few stock shares for themselves. Then the stock prices rocket upward when the next finacial forcast the insiders release says profits. It's done all the time from Coke to GM etc.

Don't want to sound to confrontational but I have not seen any stocks behaving in a pattern such as you suggest. Most execs have accumulated options to buy at a fixed price and want nothing more than for it to go up, up, and up. If you have specific examples and a time frame I can look up, I would like to see it.

What you are describing is illegal and I sure hope it doesn't go on all the time.

There are VERY strict rules on insider trading and they have to give advance notice if they plan to buy or sell their stock. Anyone can look up the stock sales or purchases by insiders. Over 75% of John Deere's stock in particular is held by institutional investors (mutual fund companies, etc.) that have full time people tracking earnings estimates and fun stuff like that. If a trend developed like you are describing that company would be reported to the SEC and would have them crawling all over them. Since Enron and Worldcom they are now putting people in jail for stuff like that.

The beauty of strict rules is it allows loop holes and plausible deniability of stock manipulation. Ever wonder what financial consultants, investment firms, numbered companies and off shore bank accounts are for? Do you really think even .1 % of what might be insider trading is investigated? Then try to prove it. Enron and Worldcom just ended up with a few figureheads busted. Where there is lots of easy money, there will be people there doing just that.

Just a rumor I'd say. Kinda how I have a Ford guy come into my Dodge dealership at least once a week and tell me Ford owns Cummins and next year the Ford will be running Cummins engine's. I've been hearing that one for 15 years, just the same kind of B.S.
