Did the fuel gauge work before you baftered the sender around while changing the fuel pump? If it did work before the fuel pump change, you may have bent it, and/or the float may be dropping on the (mis-positioned) fuel pump sock as the fuel level drops. If it was not working properly even before the fuel pump change, there could be a fuel tank grounding problem or a wiring problem, or an instrument panel problem. The sender is easy to test with an ohmmeter. Ask a friendly Chevy shop forman what the resistance values should be, full and empty, and then verify your truck's actual readings. If the resistance readings at the sensor are way off, it's the sender, if the readings are close, you'll have to track down a grounding, wiring, or instrument panel problem. If you do need a sender, and a new one is costly or tough to get, you should be able to find a good one at a southern wrecking yard, where road salt hasn't nearly eaten up the top of the fuel tank!
