David, remove that cap and inspect the lil carbon brush/spring that contacts the rotor tips end. We know the coil is firing and the other long thin springy contactor must be okay as it is how the coils side output button/terminal connects to the top part of the cap where the coil wire leads out, and you say theres fire there!!! I believe all the Wico C Mags have that single tip rotor and as long as its the correct rotor it (rotor at least) cant be out of time cuz it only fits one way on that shaft Im pretty sure. HOWEVER that rotor tip gets its voltage there in the center via a carbon brush thingy which mates up with the short lil coil wire termination, so maybe its NOT getting any connection there?? Of course, if its the wrong rotor tip (or the wrong cap) it may not be lined up with the internal cap tower terminations????? ?? When the mags spring is wound and then trips, thats when the points would be breaking open and at that time the rotor tip MUST be lined up with a cap tower inner terminal which has a plug wire leading to the correct cylinder,,,,, ,,,, and then 180 degrees later, the mag should trip again and the points again break open but the rotor tip is lined up with the other cap tower. If she pops n bangs n backfires and maybe even kicks the flywheel backwards, then I would suspect the mag to be 180 out of time which a wire reversal could make her run. But if youre getting no spark whatsoever out of either cap tower at any time, I suspect its EITHER the rotor tip contactor brush/spring,,,,, ,,,,,or the wrong rotor tip or cap (but I doubt thats it),,,,, or even the cap is cracked or has an internal short or carbon trace or is defective. INSPECT THE CAP THOROUGHLY FOR CRACKS OR CARBON ETC THEN MAKE SURE THE ROTOR TIPS END IS MAKING CONTACT WITH THAT CARBON BRUSH/SPRING. John T
