Does anyone here do the old self service fruit and vegetable stands with a 'honesty' cash box? We used to do that all the time when I was a kid. Just set up your stand by the hwy with prices posted and put a homemade wooden box with a slit cut in the top for a cash box. I was talking to a friend of mine the other day who has a small chicken house and does that with fresh eggs. He says he hasn't had a problem yet with people cleaning him out. Just wondering.

We do it and we also leave a note for people that might be a little tight on cash to help themselves..Made enough money this season for a new freezer along with two haywagons

I think it is great that this still goes on. I know it doesn't anywhere close to where I live. It gives me a little hope for fellow man.

My neighbor makes his living that way. He had too many people stealing from him so he changed his setup.Has a locked box bolted down that you put any larger bills in. He then has a small box that you can make change out of. He had that many theifs he installed a hidden video camera. When someone steals he gets the picture and asks around. Someone eventually will recoginize the theif. One guy stole $20 worth of strawberrys. He was a VP of a local bank. He lost his job and his house over it.

Don't see many veggie stands but lots of honey stands. Veggies are big business for the semi-retired. Couple that with long growing seasons in FLA lots of elderly folks have roadside stands. You just find the fella or gal you like to chat with and buy your veggies.

George is the guy we use for fresh 'maters and I carry my excess garden stuff to him so sell. He used to be my neighbor.

The nice thing is that most people are paranoid in situations like that. It has been proven that a lot of people think about trying to take the money or free veggies, but don't because they think they are being watched by someone in hiding.

We also do it at our stand. No major problems in the past couple of years. We just make sure the box dosen't have much money in it.

We do it... in reply to ntmcj, 10-06-2005 22:30:46
We have had good luck doing it, but the cash box is bolted down and has a lock on it. Had a problem with a neighbor kid the first year trying to fish money out of the slot until I 'explained' what was going to happen to him if I ever saw him on the farm again. I think most people want to be honest and are. You can't afford to pay some one to sit there all day. If a few bucks worth of produce walk away once in a while, it's just the cost of doing business.

My day does it all the time in northwest PA. He just leaves a coffee can on the picnic table. Just figure whatever you get you are ahead and don't worry if someone might take a couple bucks out of the can or help themselves to the veggies.
