In this area (eastern SD) in the past few weeks there have been at least 3 reported incidents in which adult horses have been attacked by what the owner's claim are mountain lions. Last night's newspaper had a photo on the front page of a horse recovering from it's wounds (patterns of 5 deep lacerations running from the backbone down the side).
The state game officials say it's all nonsense, that it's dogs doing the damage. But, the horses' owners insist that no dog could cause this amount of trauma.
Since we have horses, I'm curious if they are included normally in a mountain lion's preferred food list. Being that we are 400 miles east of where you would expect to find a big cat, I don't know what they like to dine on. Anybody out there know?

Keep in mind, Rauville. If the Game Wardens actually admit the horses were killed by a lion, then they would have people all over the state out trying to kill one. Thus the possiblity of eliminating them. That would put an end to what the DGF is trying to incorporate back into the wild. Lots easier to just say there are no mountian lions in SD.

dont african lions catch zebras? seems to be the same difference to me been hearing past 15 yrs about a panther in my area (western ky) never seen one hope i dont there are bobcats -wildcats here seen them no pun intended

Hey roastinear. I hear tell that there are big cats moving into the area. I am from Anderson County near Lexington. Had a relative up from Hyden (in Eastern Kentucky) this past weekend. He says they are starting to see a number of black bear, bobcat, mountain lion, panther and of course, elk. He also said this has been one of the worst years they can remember for copperheads and rattlers.

Rauville, The scratches were from an animal much larger than a dog. Dogs will not jump up on a horses back to slide down the side and scratch it. Cats use their claws to clutch and dogs use theirs for traction when running. Tell your State Game Official to remove his mentatlity from the class room and get out in the field. You most likely have a cat in the area that is new to hunting by itself or is an old one that has moved closer to man for an easier prey. A healthy cougar will kill a white tail deer a week. They eat only meat they kill unless they are sick, weak or to old to kill. A mother with young will kill 1 1/2 to 2 a week on the average. If they are able, they will cover their kill with sticks or put them in a tree. Love to hunt cougars !

A deer hunter got a picture of a mountain lion about a year ago within 10 miles of the dead center of the state. The year before there were reports of cows with claw marks down their backs and hips as you report on your local horses about 15 to 20 milwa north of there. Of course the DNR would never bring big cats in to control the deer population as they have done with timber wolves and black bears in Minnesota.

i live just NE of des moines Ia our neighbor 2 miles down the highway had a colt found dead an partily eaten up in a tree. now i have been around dogs wild an domistic all my life an i have seen one that could climb an tree, an then take a carciss with it, i did see a old coon ounce get most of the way up a tree before it fell, didnt think it could get that high but it did, but that is beside the point. that same year a gentlemen in the neighborhood lost several sheep an a couple of calves. but ooo no we dont have any big cats here in IA the DNR say. they would not answer anything about the 12 that were supposed to have been release on the skunk river bottoms a few years ago.

I"ve heard of reports and sightings here in Iowa. Me, I"ve never seen one, don"t think I want to either. Until I see a dead one in person, or a high quality picture, I am not completely convinced. With the huge population of whitetail deer here in Iowa I wouldn"t be suprised a few have made their way this far east, maybe even further. Rich

Sounds like a big cat to me. Dogs usually will bite all over the prey, ripping ears, legs, etc. If you�ve ever seen a herd of sheep or goats that a pack of dogs got into, you would know what I mean. That horse in the newspaper photo would have had bites all over if was a dog(s).

THat was like when they said there werent any in the Montains of E. KY or bears either. Then low and behold there were bears. Seems until the DNR folks biologists can confirm a certin number of resident animals which have raised offspring in an area there arent any.

Here in NW Connecticut we have mt. lion sightings by people that don't drink or smoke dope - i've heard the d.e.p. story about the deer herd - but as "word of mouth" the state denies it.

You bet they do! Here in Northern Colorado one of my neighbors shot a mountain lion that was on his front porch. He raises horses and was afraid his foals were in danger. He went out the back door and around the house to get the shot. Game warden said he was justified. Ed

By me, have pumas that the DNR released to control the deer population. And they occasionally make the papers. And they occasionally go after smaller livestock. Wouldn't surprise me if mountain lions or the sort would do such a thing, and is a good chance that they're microchipped. Dogs up on horses backs and mauling them? By the way, dogs have 4 nails and dew claws that dangle and do nothing, unless you're DNR, then they maul horses and have 5 nails.

Been several reports of ones in Omaha in the past couple of years. Back when I worked for the State of Kansas we had surveillence cameras out to catch a guy harvesting pot. Didn't get the guy, but got nifty pictures of a mountain lion. This was in the NE part of the state, north west of Topeka.

Mule deer and Whitetail make up the majority of the lion's diet, but livestock, including horses, are sometimes taken.

hey bud,
don"t let the GFP fool you. there are lions here. we have one here in the valley east of white. i treed last fall with my coonhounds and it has been seen regularly by alot of area farmers. i wouldn"t doubt one bit there"s more around either. the GFP is just in denile that the population has made it this far.

Here in south central MN, it was speculated that a cat attacked a couple of horses. Didn't match nothing else, but of course was no proof to satisfy everyone.

I used to go cave hunting around Festus, Mo. back in the 70's. We would hear a black panther scream now and then. My friend Mike got a sight of one and then we found a nest in a cave opening. I don't think a black panther is that big , but a mountain Lion I would think is big because of they live in colder weather and have to be big to survive the cold. I think the game dept. always try to keep some things secret because the animals are on the endangered list. With an animal that is dangerous, its a coin flip as to whether it should be or not. A fenced refuge would be ok with me.

I saw a cat this summer bigger more muscular than a bob cat, which are fairly common. A brownish color, in northern NY. The cat family is doing just fine.
