OT: Chevy 1500HD or 2500HD

Ok, so I have been shopping, and I finally figured out that I want a GM vehicle, crew cab, short bed 4wd. So, I am trying to compare these two, but I am having trouble finding the differences. If someone could help, I would appreciate it. Also, does anyone have an answer for why they don't have fuel numbers listed for the 2500HD? Or is it the thing that if you can afford the truck, you can afford the fuel? So, if someone can help me, please, I need it to figure out what is going on.

The 6.0 is plenty of motor for pulling a trailer my dad has a 3500 and pulls a 28ft gooseneck with around 12 thousand pounds with no problem. They do not get very good mileage though.

If I were to buy a new truck today, I would buy the 2500HD with the 8.1 liter (496ci.) Big Block. with the allison tranny. The 6.0 (362ci.?) just isn"t enough motor when your pulling. YES, the diesel is nice but, if you do the math it doesn"t add up. Take the price of the engine $5000+ added to the price of the truck. Maintenance is higher, more oil, filters,etc... Fuel prices are higher. If you take the mpg differance betwwen the two engines, You would have to drive more miles then the truck will ever last. I know that sounds bad but they don"t make them like they used too. The motors might last forever they say, I say ok but the rest of the truck is the same. Good luck on what ever you do. By the way, you should get between 12 and 14/15 mpg with the big block if you keep your foot out of it.

my father has a 2001 8.1 as fas getting 12 to 14 lol i wish about 10 maybe 11..just got back from traveling to orange tx to help my sister..got less than 6 driving 50 to 60 miles per hour with gooseneck with 2840 with loader ...and oh yes i kept my foot out of it...i talked my father out of diesel because we keep farm fuel here and i know what he would have done...i see where new allisons are now 6 speeds boy do the 5 speeds shift smooth... have nice day may god bless

Just another 2 cents. I had a 6 liter. Now have a Duramax with Allison. The 10/12 mpg were right on except when towing, down to 6. The Duramax I have now has 36K on it. They have a personal and business ododmeter. The business is towing miles for me. At best an empty tandamn axle. Most loaded is, well overloaded. Towing miles is 23+K. My overall on the 36K miles is 16.7. If I keep my foot off it, I can get 25 hiway MPG. This engine.tranny will last a lot longer and give better performance. I live in Norther MN.

I would go with the 2500HD with the Duramax and the allison trans. They get around 20 miles per gal. with 3:73 gears the 6000 gas is only available with 4:10 gears and get about 12 miles per gal The diesel is very dependable and starts good in cold weather it also has a block heater if it is real bad wich always helps.

the govt doesnt require testing and posting of fuel milage on heavier trucks. definitly go witht he 2500. you get alot beefier alot beefier truck transmission,rear end etcetc and if you actually compare the spec sheets and look at the price off the 2500 compared to 1500 its not very much for all that you get. you migth as well get the 2500 as far as fuel economy too, if you gear the 2500 and the 1500 the same it should get the same fuel milage. as far as the duramax that is an awsome combo annd cold weather starting is absolutly no problem. none. with the new computers that monitor coolent temp, iat (intake air temp) etc and have electronic injectors (ie fire the injectors 2 or 3 times or more instead of just once they can do amazing things alter timing etc and cold weather starting isnt a problem with the newer diesels. good glow plugs are still a must but most older diesels starting them was a bear even with all glow plugs working. company has duramax's and have started to 0 degrees not plugged in(dont advise but things happen breakers trip, cords get unplugged) and never had one not start or have to use either (which is a huge no no with glow plugs and aluminum.) i would go with the diesel and for sure the 2500.

The 1500HD has a 8600lb GVW rating,the 2500HD has a 9200lbs GVW. The 2500HD also has the larger 14 bolt full floating rear axle,and it sets a little higher than the 1500HD. I work at a GM shop and just bought a new 2500HD crew cab short bed 4x4,they are really good trucks. By the way you won't find any fuel ratings on trucks in this size range. Good Luck!!

Ok, so if they don't have any fuel ratings for this size range, what do they get? I guess I am looking at the 6.0 gas engine. I was contemplating the 6.6 duramax, but I might be taking a job in WI, and am wondering about how the cold weather affects the diesel engine starting in the mornings.

Both my new truck and the HD I traded in had the 6.0 liter, and get appox. 10 to 12 mpg. I haven't really seen any cold weather problems with the Duramax. In my case I tow my gooseneck maybe once every couple months so I really couldn't talk myself into the extra 6500-7000 dollars for the diesel and the Alison.

I never heard anyone claim over about 12MPG from a 6.0L in a 4wd truck. They use a lot of gas for the power they make, IMHO. I think GM is missing the boat by not offering the 5.3 as an 'economy' option in the 2500 series. I have one in my '04 1500 and love it.

Putting a smaller engine in that heavy of truck may not help and might actually hurt the fuel mileage. Which burns more fuel, a bigger engine running half way open or a smaller engine running wide open?

The current 5.3 has nearly the HP and torque specs of a 1980's big block.

I have a 96 Chev 1T dually W/454 big block 4x2 and get about 10.4 average running empty. Don't ask about pullin a load. Just have to make sure I don't pass to many gas stations. I think a diesel would have been a better choice. LOL Norm

We HAD 4 2000 Chevy one dualies, between the blown intake gaskets and the fuel pumps it was sometimes hard to get a fix on mileage. Down to diesels only in the heavy pickups and making the crews "make do" with Chevy 1500s with the 4.3. Right now that appears to be the most fuel effiecent and durable engine in a half ton. They average 17-19 MPG and are about as tough as they come. The only problem they seem to have is the weak fuel pump.

1500 Crew Cab LT 4X4 5.75 Ft Bed 5284 Pounds
1500HD Crew Cab LT 4X4 6.5 Ft Bed 5762 Pounds
2500HD Crew Cab LT 4X4 6.5 Ft Bed 5883 Pounds


It doesn't appear that the 6.5 foot bed comes on the 1500 Crew - you have to move up to the 1500HD to get that bed with a crew cab.

The HDs both stand 2 inches taller and about an inch wider then the 1500 even though the 1500 has taller tires.

The decission of a 1500 or 2500 series depends on what you intend to do with a truck. If all you plan on doing is riding around using it as a passenger vehilcle , the 1500 is fine. The 5.3 engine wil get you some fuel mileage. If you plan on towing a trailer or camper the 2500 is the truck. Heavier brakes & axles & engine transmission choices are available. The 6000 engine is not a fuel miser. 10 to 12 MPG. Spend the bucks and buy a Duramax diesel with the Allison transmission. In my opinion the best combo.

I have one with the Duramax and allision combo and love it, it'll go any where and pull just about anything and I get consistantly between 20 - 25 mpg depending on driving situation!

I think you're wrong about the 5.3 engine. Both the 1500HD and 2500HD have the 6.0 as standard engine.

Not required by CAFE (or whatever governing body) on 3/4 and heavy trucks.
