I hope this isnt too OT but my 1997 Ford f150 with the 4.6 engine is losing oil, mabe 2 qts per 100 miles, also showing low oil preasure at times when full of oil. Has 139200 miles, doesnt smoke, cant see any leaks,no noise, runs fine but for how long? Thanks for any knowlege on this topic. Lou

Funny you mention this, I had the same problem last week with my 89' F-150 with the 5.0 engine. with 193,000 miles. I'd be rolling along and lose oil pressure, hit a bump and have oil pressure.
Finally got under the hood and pulled the wire off the sending unit and cleaned it. Have good oil pressure now. Also this engine uses a quart every 900 miles or so (no dust in the driveway anyway).

I think the first thing I would do is put a mechanical guage directly on the block. the fitting may be hard to find. It is probably 1/8 pipe thread like a lot of pressure guages. Stan

If your engine is using 2 qts per 100 miles, you have a problem. If it's not leaking out, it has to be going somewhere. Is your radiator coolant now full of oil? If not, then the engine is burning it. You might want to do a compression check to see if a cylinder or cylinders has leaky rings.

pump could be bad or sending unit going bad or botton end could be giving out time for bearings shot , you will just have to start with one thing and go from there .

Where do I start? Is there an easy way to test the pump? Thanks Lou

Start by finding where the oil is going. Leaking out on ground, or leaking out and blowing back on bottom of truck. Or: if it is burning it, the exhaust will be blue and black and the plugs, or a plug will be all crapped up. Two quarts in a hundred mile--you got to be able to see where it is going.

It may not be 2 qts per 100 miles but its a significant amount. One of the problems I have a heck of a time seeing the oil on the stick when the oil is clean. I dont see any oil or smoke?

I've seen where people have made the oil more visible by roughing-up the dipstick end with a file. Or by drilling a series of small holes in the oil level area to detect the oil.

Turns out ive got it overfilled by quite a lot. Mechanic showed me a trick last night, put the dip stick in water then check the oil, much easier to read. Old age is for the birds.
