Can anyone shed some light on how complex my situation may be? I have a JD 2020 with, what I believe to be a cracked head or gasket. There is, after running a while, a fair amount of steam exiting the crank case vent tube. The oil is a bit milky also. Ive been told the crack can be repaired as good as new, I dont see how, however, Im no mechanic, so ,Im interested in any and all opinions out there. I need to have this running asap. Also, what other components can be replaced during this stage of tear down? rings? bearings ect? Do you think theres any damage to the rod bearings ect. from the A-freeze & water which entered the crank case? Thank you for any guidance you can give.

one more thing, forgot to add it in my other post. If you caught it in time, the crank should be OK. Plan on new bearings, rods and mains, anyway, but that is part of the inframe. I was lucky and had an Ok crack. If the crank is not Ok, then you are talking splitting the tractor and another grand or so, probably then just go with a new long block at around $4500 plus installation.

You're probably barkin' at cylinder liner pitting due to cavitation erosion/electrolysis. I had this on my Deere 2350 which has a similar engine. I had an inframe done on it by the local Deere dealer, cost approximately four grand. You might be pig lucky, tho, and have it be a pitted oil cooler or a head gasket. Wouldnt hurt to check the oil cooler for tightness, just for craps and giggles, but most likely its pitted cylinder liners. GOod luck on that.

Before a tear down pull the oil pan and pressurize the radiator and see where it leaks from. Look close at the bottom of the liners for o-ring failure or pitting thru to the inside bottom of the liner.

That might be what you think it is, or it might be a more common malady called electraulysis. (A.K.A., wet sleeve pitting)

Coolant gets acidic. That, combined with cavitation in the cooling system, dirt particles, and other contributing factors will eat small holes in the cylinder sleeves. It will show up just as you described.

Plan on a complete rebuild if that's the case.
