I just bought my first tractor and would like to buy some manuals for it but, I know nothing about tractor and need to find out what model I have. I know it is a Ford, and the eldery lady I bought it from thinks it is about a 1958-59. The tractor is a diesel and has a front loader and a fairly large backoe unit that reads "sherman power digger". If anyone would be interested in helping me figure out what model I have it would be greatly appretiated. I can supply the numbers from the front end loader and photos to anyone willing to help.

Look here to find the model and serial #.
You may need to wire brush off some paint and dirt to see the #'s.

Tell us what you find.

Unfortunately the photo is of a gas tractor. I have looked at several diesels and have yet to find a good, readable serial number. Apparently the battery acid leaks down on the spot where the serial number was, or was supposed to be, and eats up the metal enough to obliterate the stamped numbers over the years. On the diesel tractors I have looked at, the numbers are just, plain gone. Too bad Ford didn't have a better idea about where to put the serial numbers, but apparently they didn't think about that potential problem. It appears to be much less of a problem with gas tractors, maybe because of the difference in the battery box area.

The series number can be inferred by studying the options the tractor has and decoding it from the Ford Tractor Resource Page or the I&T manual. For example, a 1959 larger size diesel with a 4 speed transmission, adjustable front end and 3 point would probably be a 841D.

With the backhoe attachment, you might have an industrial model tractor, with a heavier front end and (I think) a different power steering system. I would love to have one of those! Good luck!

That's the spot. Since it's a diesel, the battery is above this area, & the acid may have eaten some of the numbers off it.

Then you need to look at code numbers on the radiator or the rear axles to determine if the date you supplied is about right.

Then, tell us what type of tranny it has (4 or 5 or SoS, live or non-live pto if it is a 5-speed) and is it a lower utility style with wide front, or a taller row-crop style? Does it have the small or large engine?

With the above info, one way or another, it can be narrowed down to what you have. Hope you can read those numbers, that makes it easy.

If you can find the serial number plate on the tractor, post the numbers, that might be helpful. Numbers off the lader probably not help. Look in the photo section to the left, and see if you can find a similar tractor.
