Caterpillar does not make, build or manufacture agricultural tractors.
In the few short years since 2002, when AGCO Corporation acquired the Challenger line of track tractors from Caterpillar, the Challenger brand has grown into a full line of serious farm machinery. Today, in addition to track tractors from 225 to 570 hp, the Challenger brand covers a full line of wheel tractors from 23 to 240 PTO hp, a high-quality family of hay equipment, and two of the most reliable and productive combines on the market. All are built to tough standards and backed by the Cat dealer organization.

jfp, I think you missed the point...

My friends tell me that parts and service are way too expensive. Clock starts when service truck leaves the shop and at about $90.00 per hr around here. The tracked tractor craze is over. Everyone around here is going back to wheel tractors.

If you're talking about the challenger tractors, that is most likely because they are too expensive. Why would you go to a cat dealer and buy a challenger tractor when you can got to your AGCO dealer and get a tractor that rolled off the same exact assembly line and put together by the same bunch of people for a whole lot less. It must be that some paint jobs are just more than other :). Thats my view. The father of a good friend of mine is one of the main sales men for Wayne Supply, which carries cat stuff, and told me about the challenger equipment, it is all just AGCO with a yellow paint job.

Cats are great, just expensive. They make engines that go into a lot of applications. You can find 3208 cat engines in a big oliver tractor. They make big V10's and V12's for generators. Thing about them, you can let the rpm down lower under a load and keep on going unlike others.
