I have a 961 with a vertical exhaust pipe. I drive in the woods routinely, and am continually having to jockey around limbs.

Is there any reason I couldn"t run the pipe down and back as in the N series ( back pressure problems )??

How about running it straight down 2-3 inches below the bottom of the engine and having the pipe bent out and to the front? Would I be battling exhaust in my face?

I think if if was me, I would put a 90 degree elbow in the pipe just below the level of the hood, facing forward. Lay the muffler facing forward, and then install another 90 on the outlet to direct the exhaust out to the left. That should solve the clearance problem, will probably keep most of the exhaust out of your face, and will save the exhaust system and manifold from the destruction it will most likely endure if you install it under the tractor. Any machine that is operating in the woods needs to have as clean a bottom as possible, as there is always slash that gets forced up into the tractor when you drive over it, or even a stump that could tear the whole system off. I would not go with an underslung exhaust. If you do face the exhaust forward, be sure to brace the top of the muffler so that it isn't placing undue stress on the manifold. Good luck.

Good question. I have a 641D with vertical exhaust and have the same problem driving in the woods. I have a loader on that tractor and sometimes put up the bucket to protect the exhaust stack. Even so, it has got bent back somewhat and doesn't "look right".

My other tractor is a 851 gas with under the tractor exhaust. I think it was made that way, and works fine. It is much quieter than the diesel tractor, but it isn't much fun hooking up implements with the exhaust blowing back at the rear.

I have thought about replacing the messed up exhaust on the 641D with something more substantial and braced, but with an extension pipe that I can fairly easily remove when there is a clearance problem. It would mostly involve using the existing parts and adding an exhaust system hanger bracket, probably to the hood tin. Rather than going straight up like it is now, I would have a pipe bent to point the exhaust gas up and forward. It might help the exhaust in the face problem I now have if the wind is just right.

My riding lawn mower routes the exhaust out more or less forward and I have never noticed any real problem with that system on that machine. I wouldn't want my diesel tractor exhaust going down, because sometimes it shoots some fire out the top if it is working hard and often puts out some sparks--I really have to watch it when it is very dry. But I think it might be worth a try sending the exhaust forward with a gas engine. Just be sure that the exhaust stream will not heat parts that shouldn't be heated and that the pipe doesn't hang so low that you catch it on things you drive over. Remember that the axle can pivot quite a bit too.

I would be interested in hearing how it works out for you. Good luck!

Just take off the cast vertical exhast elbow and go to your local New Holland parts man and tell him you need a horizontal exhast pipe for a 800 or 900. Probably runs around $25.

One of our 960"s came with an exaust loop down & under the floorboard & out the back.

HATED it. Dad never spent money or time on anything, but he changed that in a hurry! It heated up your clutch foot, burned off grass right at the back of the tractor if you were doing stationary work, and gassed a person out hooking up implements or running an auger, etc.

But, it works, if that is what you want & have different needs than we did.

If you're going to custom makethe loop, keep the bend radius as big as you can and that should alay your back pressure worries.

Thanks for all the advice. I still don't know what I'll do, but I appreciate the ideas!

Theres no reason why you can't do the exhause down and back like an N. I would try the front becuase of smoke in the face etc.
