Has anyone comments on the service manuals before I buy one. I see no links to browse one. I have a JD 420 and not used to working on it. Thanks.

I feel that the I & T manual complomints the factory manual, I now have only Fords but I have not only the orignal owners manual and shop manual and the repro parts manual and different versions of the I & T and one will have something in that the other does not. When I still had my Deere's I had the owners manual and parts manual and the I & T and for mine at that time I never knew Deere to have made a shop manual for them

I always buy an I&T for any tractor I take on. They are not intended to provide info on operation or maintenance. A full set of manuals; operator's, service, and parts are a necessary expense in this hobby. Good used ones are available from a variety of sources. Often, the I&T presents an adjustment, tolerance or schematic that differs from the factory stuff just enough to be helpful, at least to me. Ben

I got three real manuals for each tractor. I get the 3 tractor brand manuals: Operator Manual, Repair Manual, and Parts Manual. I save money in the long run by having the real manuals, and it makes geting the rights parts (new or used) very easy. Tried I & T one time - - never again.

I'm not impressed with the I&T manuals .They are
very incomplete. Check Ebay for JD service manuals
I got one for a 2640 for about $40 .Some sold for over $100 but you have to wait for the right one.
New from JD was $125 as I recall.

I agree with Dave. Had some clutch problems with a JD B - I & T manual showed methods of taking apart that were completely wrong.

First of all when the original I & T manuals were produced they were sold to implement dealers and farm shops. They were designed for mechanics who worked on this stuff every day but if a trade in or other brand came to the shop for service they had information so they the professional could make the necessary repairs and adjustments. They were also available as a subscription. In other words if you ordered the services for a year all the manual published that year came to you no matter the model or the brand. Now if you have a piece of equipment you purchase your own manual and lot a of the tools that are mentioned would be found in a comercial shop are not found in the average do it yourself owners tool box. They were never as complete as the original manufactures manuals, but in some cases there were I & T mauals but no manufactures manuals for some models and one company used the I & T manual as there official shop manual. Confused even more now?

I have both the IT shop manual and the John
Deere manual for the 420 c.The JD manual
SM2019 purchased from the local JD dealer
eight years ago for $56.00 is in my opinion
head and shoulders above the IT book. One
of the best sources of info is the parts manual,
especially if you are buying used parts.

If JD even made or makes a manual for that model that would be the best to own. Short of that the I & T are far far better than nothing and worth every penny. The I & T are not meant to be owners manuals they were basically made for the professional to help them make repairs. A JD parts book is very useful too.

I should have stated that the JD dealer wants $150 and the IT is under $30. I have an owner manual for the serial number cut above mine and most is pertinent, but not all, and is quite general as it gives basic info. Guess I will monitor post and see what appears before I decide. I have another person helping me, but he is familiar with the horizontal engine.

Why call your dealer for manuals when he is tripling the price? 1-800-522-7448 for the real JD manuals straight from Mother Deere. A IT manual is for the person who doesn"t care for how acurate, complete or current. The IT manual is for those shoppers that care only for the lowest price. The IT manuals do have thier place for some roles. Such as holding doors open or placing it on the work bench. Then placing the JD manual on top of the IT manual so it doesn"t get dirty.

The IT manuals are very disappointing. Years ago I owned an 856 IH. Somehow I misplaced the owners manual, so I purchased an I&T SHOP manual, only to find out the original ownwers manual had more information relevant to the maintenance of the tractor than the IT shop manual had, and much of the info in the IT manual was incorrect or incomplete.

I believe the actual JD manual is better. They are so step-by-step that it is hard to screw up, or at least not understand what is happening. They are more pricey though. I have used a lot of IT manuals successfuly too. I just don't think they are as thorough.
