Some of you may remember, I was having problems w/ my Dodge Dakota not running well. Took the afternoon off and decided I better try to get this thing running. Brother and I (ok, my brother) were messing around with it early last week, had the vaccum leak narrowed down to a couple hoses, but was getting dark, called it a night. Finally got around to looking at it last night, one line was real soft and didn"t seem real snug. Today ran to the auto parts store, grabbed a small hose clamp and threw it on the hose. Truck runs much smoother, quieter, and doesn"t smoke now. Here I was thinking I was going to have to put a new engine in, and all it cost me was a $.69 hose clamp to get it running again. Still more work to be done, but I can start driving it again. Anyone else do something like these?

Had a 99 Dodge CTD (ex wife has it now, thank god with diesel at $3.35 gallon). Needed to replace the batteries and wanted to save a buck. Replaced them at night and the wrench slipped and arched. Didn"t realize until the next day when I had no brakes that it burnt a hole thru the aluminum brake line. $250 later I didn"t save any money on the batteries. I can"t belive I am telling this story.

Bought a 86 ford pick up 4 by 4, straight six, 4 spd. no rust. Guy said motor knocks after running a few minutes, begged me to take it off his hands for $400. I brought it home and changed the oil filter, 45000 miles later still runs like a watch.

But for the grace of God go I. A few weeks ago I was setting up to pour concrete, jumped into truck and it wouldn"t turn over. Checked starter motor and battery connections and managed to get mobile but she ran like a hairy goat. Spent most of the day on concrete pour. In late afternoon replaced the battery terminals and it started OK but still ran rough & smokey so I figured I"d blown a computer or something and would be up for some big bucks. Was just about to slam the hood down when I happened to notice a vac line diconnected (must have knocked it off when messing with the starter motor). Goodness knows what I"d have ended up paying if had got a machanic to look at it!

I use to work for a Ford truck dealer.
A man brought in his new pickup complaining about excessive oil use.
Every mechanic in the shop had a look at it and we tried everything we could think of.
Nothing seemed to work.
Even replaced the motor with a new long block but still used a lot of oil.

They were just about to give this guy a new pickup when one guy noticed the splash guard on the inside of the valve cover was missing.
Replaced the valve cover and problem was gone.

I rebuilt a Buick Turbo V-6 for a friend of mine several years ago. After putting the motor back in and connecting everything up, could not get it to run right. After a couple of days of checking this and that, fould a "blind" hole in the intake that wasn't so blind. A 1/2 inch hole really makes for a big vacuum leak. Ran like a dream after plugging that hole. Larry

After two independent mechanics gave up trying to find out why my 88 Chev. pickumup was so cold natured, I tucked my tail between my legs and went to the dealer. He replaced all sensors he could think of. Replaced fuel pump. (all these he pulled back off/out). Finally, after keeping it for several weeks, he checked the running fuel pressure. Found regulator spring broke. $300 plus for a two dollar spring. This from a man with 20 years GM experience. So who's stupid now besides me and you?:)

Hey Rich !! Great to hear you got it running better . BUT ,,if you ever want to up grade $500 takes that rebuilt 3.9 V6 ,and everything that goes with it ! Tired of tripping over it , lol . Need to make room in my shop for my TD6 winter project. Gonna have "Garage sale for Guys " coming up soon . Boring bar, air jacks , tools i don't use anymore etc Stay tuned for more details to come. yup, some days I cannot seem to get anything to work but then I go back a day later and have it resolved in a few minutes and wander why the solution did not occur to me sooner.

Aloha, If you feel stupid now ("one line was real soft and didn"t seem real snug.")wait until that same hose gives you trouble again. I would change the hose with a new one (old hose is bad).

Figured I needed an injector pump for '85 Ford 6.9 diesel. Took it to my mechanic and he said some little duvissary was disconnected or needed to be drained or some such- didn't charge me a cent. Pretty good guy.

Try having a ground less then 4" from where it goes to $280 latter they figured it out and moved it to a head bolt runs great now

Don't feel bad. It took an ASAE-certified "professional" "mechanic" (quotes indicate sarcasm...) 2 weeks and $500 worth of parts swapping to find a bad EGR on my SiL's GMC pickup.

I know this because SiL was driving MY truck while this bozo was easter-egging his way through SiL's checkbook...

Yep,bought a really nice 84 silverado years ago dirt cheap with a "blown" motor,went to pull it out and found a 3/8" vacumm line T down behind the a/c compressor had come unplugged,plugged it back together,bolted back on the stuff I had taken loose and drove it about 40,000 miles..I expected to be truly blown,cause I bought it from a good friend thats a decent backyard mechanic..
