Have I got this straight?

The 14.9 X 38 is wider and taller than the 15.5 X 38 and will fit a 13" rim?

Have I got this right? Is this a new designation 'er something? (Tires just aren't my strong suit). :>(

Here's one that will mess with your head a little!!!! I had a pair of 15-5-38 mounted on 15x38 rims and a pair of 14-9-38 mounted on 14-38 rims. The 14-9's where Firestone field and road f-151's about 70% and the 15-5's where older BF Goodrich about 40%. Now here is the kicker, the 15-5's where taller buy 1-1/2 inches. Talked to tire guys as well as others and nobody can answer how or why. I have a new pair of Firestone field and road f-151's and they are taller then the 15-5's. Leave it to me to end up with a pair of bassakward tires!!!!! ( LOL )

14.9's aren't wider - actually an inch narrower, but much taller; and due to the larger girth it's footprint is a little larger- more of a dozer track event. 15.5's were designed, back when, to have the same rolling radius as the 13.6's so duals could be put on with the popular at the time 12-38's (now 13.6-38). The 15.5's low profile is the reason pullers like 14.9's and 16.9,s. I have two tractors in my shop right now, sitting side-by-side, one on 14.9-38's the other on 15.5-38's. The 14.9's are noticebly taller

Allen, the 14.9x38 is taller, not wider. The 15.5x38 was produced as the first low profile tractor tire. They really don't have a sister size in the old numerical designation. I would trade all of my tire knowledge for a little bit of tranny knowledge! Hope this helps. John

go to titanstore.com/store
then pick TITAN HI-POWER LUG R-1
should be a chart there showing inflated sizes, rim sizes etc for Titan tires (14.9 on top of 15.5 makes easy comparison)
Good luck

Thanks Ron,

That finally made it sink in. You're right, looks like that tire was made for the 13" rim.

Okay, now will ya loan me a few bucks to buy some tractor tires with? I'll pay ya back when my brother straightens up (He's a hunchback). :>)

I just sold part of my collection to put tires on the Oliver 66 that belonged to grandpa. Agravating tires was only put on there in 1968 should have lasted longer. The fronts rotted enough to peel like retreads. The backs over 60% rubber only 8 boots in the right tire, none in the left. Put new firestones 12.4x38 on back and 5x15 on front about 750 all told and I did the work. Now the rear rims sure look nice inside to bad the tire covers up the new paint.

15.5's are shorter and wider than the 14.9's.

If you check the Firestone website and look at their handbook it will list the dimensions of all their ag tires and recommeded rim size. It's the easiest way to compare and find the info you want. By the way, I like the taller profile of the 14.9 tire.
How's your wife?
