I've got two tractors that always have a damp spot around each battery cell cap. One is a 756 with a Delco DN externally regulated alternator. The other is a 460 with a generator. The 756 alternator puts out 14 volts running wide open, not sure about the 460 yet. What causes this? The 460 is so bad that it runs down the side of the battery, and I'm afraid it's going to wreck my new paint. I can hear the batteries on that one gurgling, even with the ground cable unhooked. I just got the generator rebuilt and a new regulator, going to put them on this weekend.

One of my neighbors had this problem with an electric golf cart. Turns out he was using of those automatic battery water fillers that stops filling when the proper level is reached. Turns out that his particular battery filler was over filling the batterys.

One cause is charging at too-high voltage. One car that was doing this was charging at nearly 18 volts with an externally regulated alternator. Check the voltage at the battery while the engine is running. Should be slightly below 15 volts. Another cause is a loose internal cell connector. But this is usually on only one cell within the battery. It heats up and boils off the electrolyte.

Hey Bus Driver, Be careful. A loose internal connection will cause a spark that will blow that defective battery clear to the bad place. Had one once on a JD AO. Hit the starter and BAM. Sure glad it was under a good cover. Ed

Had a similar problem, went to the battery mfg web site and found they were filled higher than recommended; Lowered level and no more problem. Could be??

Old or defective batteries will do this, even if the charging rate IS correct. I think some crappy battery brands make be worse than others, too, at being slobbery.

An Exide Orbital or Optima spiral cell AGM battery is a sealed unit that will not leak any corrosive fumes or acid unless severly overcharged. With this type of battery you will never have a corroded terminal or corrosion around a restored tractor battery compartment. These battery's have great cranking power and very long life,I have One optima in a pickup that is 15 years old and still cranks like new. They are an install it and forget it battery with the exception that they will not tolerate overcharging. An hour on an unregulated fast charger,or a bad generator or alternator system that puts out over 15 volts will quickly gas off the electrolyte and ruin the battery.

Sam's Club and Costco both have the Optima batteries at about $100 or so.

My local NAPA store sells both the Exide Orbital and the Optima battery. I have read posts by others that some of the big box stores sell them at a considerable discount. My NAPA store sells the largest Exide Orbital for $106 and the big Optima at around $160. either brand is slow to self discharge and sulfate in equipment that spends a lot of time parked.
