I have a 1948 B john deere that vibrates really bad. I have set the end play in the crank and checked the timeing. Is it possible the flywheel was out of ballance from the factory! I'm about to pull my hair out. Your help would be greatly apreciated!
Ron

You will have to remove the bolt and large washer holding the clutch driver on to see the timing marks.

Grew up working on the 2 cyl Waterloo tractors at dad's JD shop. Have seen farmers get the clutch and flywheel both out of time when doing an overhaul on the farm, and when running at full throttle, the tractors would literally dance around on the ground with the sreering wheel shaft flexing up and down like a reed in the wind. Then they would bring it to the shop and complain of it vibrating so bad it hurt their hands to drive it. Then when you told them that they had the disk and flywheel out of time they would argue with you,"it can't be out of time, don't you see it running?" Just walk away and shake your head till they leave, then take it down and retime the flywheel, and clutch disk.

I think the marks on the clutch should look something like this. > <

Most likely it is your clutch drive disc that is placed on the crankshaft incorrectly. Open up the clutch and remove the outer disc so you can see the clutch drive disc. (the one that is fitted to the crankshaft on splines) You will note that one side of the drive disc is heavily weighted. Mark the center of this weighted area with an ink pen. Rotate the engine so that # 2 piston (right side) is at TDC. The line you have drawn on the weighted section of the drive disc should now be toward the back of the tractor, or as you view it, at the 9:00 position. If not, pull the drive disc off and rotate it until it corresponds with the above suggestion. Our "G" was the same when we bought it. It was about one fourth turn off. Not real difficult to repair. Sure makes a difference in the way it runs. Have Fun!!!

Ron, have you had EITHER the flywheel or the Clutch Drive Disk off lately???? If EITHER is on the wrong crankshaft spline, she will shake big time. They are BOTH built purposely out of balance so the heavy side on one must be exactly 180 opposote from the heavy side on the other or its vibration city. Look for matching up V marks or set screws in the crank which allow them to both be in time. The flywheel also needs to be on the correct crank splines so the timing marks such as its Left Hand Impulse and Left Hand Exhaust can be used as designed for. When the flywheels Left Hand Impulse timing mark is in the 3 o clock position lined up with a mark on the tractors side AND IF THE FLYWHEELS ON THE CORRECT SPLINE the left piston ought to be at its TDC.

I deffently have the crackshaft timed right, but I can't find a arrow or mark on the clutch side, so how do I know when it's 180 opposite the crank?

Look at the offset, the heavy weight poriton, on the clutch drive disk (or roll on floor or balance on a pipe/shaft etc to find heavy side) and set it 180 opposite from the same on the flywheel.

What they are telling you is that there are marks (an arrow) on each end of the crank, and a similar arrow on the flywheel and clutch driver that MUST be in register with the arrow on the crank, or the engine will shake like hell...!!!!

The flywheel AND the clutch drive disc MUST be timed to the crankshaft.

There is supposed to be I think a rivit in the clutch end of crank to keep plates from going on in wrong position, and that rivit head can get knocked off by trying to put disk on wrong and I know Dad did that and was a lot of vibration for a couple of years till we found out and the flywheel if not on corect will not let you time it correct as timing marks are on flywheel.
