Value of JD tractor with a replacement serial tag?

I am looking into purchasing a 320 standard tractor that is missing a serial tag. I understand that I can get the block number off the tractor and can give it to John Deere to find the original serial number and can get a tag issued. My questions are where do I submit the block number to find out the serial number, how long does it take to get a response, and how much in value does a tractor drop when it has a replacement tag issued by John Deere? 320s are a rare tractor so I dont mind having the replacement tag on it but I am just wondering how much it would actually drop the value? Thanks for any comments and help, it is greatly appreciated!

There are serial number tag counterfeiters that will make an original looking tag with any number on it you want.

It's not that big a deal to get one. I received two of them. I called the JD service manager and he contacted the territory rep who in turn sent a form to fill out. It asked for the number stamped in the block-not the casting number- and why you needed a new one. Had to have it notorized and sent back to the rep. It took a while but he and the service manager came out to my place and actually put it on the tractor. There was no charge for the service. Not all JD's have a number stamped in the blocks. These were on a 420 and 430 High Crops. It took probably 2 months before they came out and they are not like the original tags but at least they will verify that it is what you say it is.

Perhaps the vertical engine tractors have a number someplace that can be verrified but the horizontal engine tractors do not have anything that can be verrified.

Go to your nearest Deere dealer, seek out the person in charge of such matters, and get the straight "dope" as to what is required by Deere to issue a replacement plate.

That will get you a lot farther than listening to all the comments from people who may, or may not know what they are talking about!

CAREFULL!!!! Don't believe every thing you hear. It takes a lot more then a block number. All 320's had the same block number and I believe they even carried over into the 420's. Not for sure on that but am sure it takes alot more then a few casting numbers. New a man that had a high crop with original purchase reciept with number on it and a 1/2 of tag and still took alot more to get a replacement.

Yes all 320's have the same block number, but thats not what were talking about. Each block has a serial number code on the right side under the generator, beside the hydraulic pump.It usually is 3 or 4 numbers and a letter. This number can be traced by JD to get the correct serial number for that tractor. Most JD dealers don't know anything about this, you need to go through the JD block man.

I'm not a collector, don't have any green tractors of that shade, and am probably thus the worst person to give advise on this....

If I were looking for a tractor to use, a new tag would bother me - stolen, or what is the deal, why a new tag?

If I were looking to collect a rare item, when the most basic ID of the machine is not there, it would make me want to move on.

I suspect this is a big deal.....

I have never tried to get a tag but a few year ago Green Magazine had an artical in about that and it is a very complocated prossess. You have to have a lot of proof as to what you have from background as no place on tractor is all you need to get the tag.

Make sure it's not a 40 with a yellow stripe.
