My suggestion is to buy one from Lodge, made in the USA and it will come to you pre-seasoned... :>)

Aloha, I use regular vegetable oil and bake it in the oven. Use it only for frying and after you are finished cooking, drain off the excess oil and wipe up the rest. Rinse the pan with a brush under running cold water. Never use any detergent!! Oil the pan after use and it will be better than teflon. Oh, don't ever leave the pan heating without any oil because it will burn off all the oil out of the pores in the cast iron and you will have to start all over again.

IMO there is a magic bullet to curing cast iron pans.
1. Do not use oils
2. use lard or shorting on inside and out
3. preheat your oven from 375 to 400 degrees
4. place your cast iron pan in oven and bake for 1 hour, remove from oven and let it cool down slowly.
You will be happy with final results. Very little food will stick to the pan!!! My Grandmother taught me this method 50 years ago...HTH

Keith

There's off topic, and then there's off topic. Anyhow, just use any oil you want- and start cooking with it. Grit your teeth the first few times, scrape it well and re-oil, and pretty soon, it will stop sticking. There is no magic bullet to make it perfect the first time you use it.

I always use Olive oil and for that matter we don't have anything but cast iron pans. Yes I do a lot of the cooking also. LOL

A few months ago on the Country Living board they discussed this at length. You should ask over there if you haven't already. This is right up their alley. HTH. Regards, Cosmo
