Hello - Just bought a 1992 Buick Lesabre with the GM 3800 engine. Coil post # 3 went to cylinder # 6 and coil # 6 went to cylinder # 3. (Plug wires 3 and 6 were crossed.) Car ran great this way, no problems. I switched them back to the correct way and notice no change in performance or idling...still very good.
How can this be?

Hi Mark,

It's been a lot of years ago, but let me give this a stab.

Those coils are arranged so that two cylinders fire at the same time from the same coil; one is firing on the power stroke while one is firing on the exhaust stroke. They pop this way so that the hydrocarbons are lowered with a more complete burn out the exhaust.

Since #3 and #6 are half a world away in the firing order (at opposite cycles), either post could do the ignition duties.

If I'm thinkin' right on the firing order, you should be able to switch 1 and 5 and/or 2 and 4 and get the same result.

Hope I got it right anyway,

Allan

I dont think the older 3800's had the intake\egrpipe issues did they?

1996 and up are the ones with the intakes leaking at the egr port.
