I've got a 1970 model R40 Ditch Witch. It has a Continental F-163 engine with a Zenith carb.

After rebuilding the carb 3 seperate times the fuel bowl overfills & in fact will even drip into the air intake hose while cranking the engine.

The float & needle valve have been cleaned & adjusted so I think I've eliminated that problem. It has been suggested to me that the fuel pump, which is newly installed from NAPA, may be pumping too much pressure & that I should only have 3 psi from the pump!

I'd like to check the fuel pump pressure but can't find a tester. Anyone know where I can find one? Also, any suggestions on this repair?

Take rubber hose in container of fuel above level of carb siphon so gas can ru to carb if over pressure is problem this will by pass fuel pump, had same nerve racking problem found the needle valve in float was not shutting off fuel when bowl got full tiny speck of trash was the reason.

I have a forklift with the same engine. I had the same problem and it ran me crazy. Float
had tiny hole in it. Put in a new float solved the problem.

Also I have an R40 Ditch Witch with Wisconsin
engine. I have a parts manual for it. If you need some info on this machine would be glad to
help. This one has been in my families business
since 1975.

RKN, thanks for the suggestions. I'm reasonably sure that the float is intact but I'll check it again. I did have a trash problem at first but cured it by cleaning fuel tank & installing a second inline fuel filter.

My R40 is about a 1970 model, according to the Ditch Witch people. Are the Wisconsin Gas & the Continental F-163 engines the same? I thought I'd read that the 2 companies had merged.

I really need to get this thing running.

The Continental F-163 is a inline4 cylinder that
is liquid cooled. Wisconsin is a V4 design that
is air cooled. I think there were several different engines used in the R40. I don't
know about the two companies merging. I not
very fond of the Wisconsin engine, but it gets the job done. I have this same F-163 engine in a forklift and a welding machine, very reliable
engines. I think your problem is either a hole
in your float or your needle valve. You just
have to hang in there till you find it. I will
tell you on the F-163 you should be sure your
spark gap is set at .020 and try to stay away
from Champion plugs, use A/C or Autolite. I
have found this makes a difference on the F-163
engine.

Hope this helps and post a message when you
find out whats going on.

Got a tape measure? Got a piece of plastic pipe?
Pump should not lift gas more than about 2.5m (8-1/2 feet if you are US). Do not smoke, no sparks etc if checking this way!

My vacuum guage will also read fuel pump pressure. It was a cheapie, but I don"t know what"s currently available.

Had a similar situation with a Kohler engine on a drilling rig. Ended up with a pressure limiter that was adjustable down to 1 psi. IIRC, it was under $10, probably from NAPA. No guage on it, but you could dial down for lower pressure.
